Chapter 13 — The Children of Trial Seven

Trial Seven had been conducted thirty years earlier.
Brightwell scientists tested an experimental neurological treatment on newborns whose parents were told it was a standard vitamin study.
Most children experienced no immediate effects.
A small number later developed heart disorders, seizures or heightened sensitivity to anesthetic drugs.
Olivia’s heart condition was genetic.
Sophie’s was not.
Her medical records showed she had suffered unexplained blackouts as a child.
Daniel had also experienced violent migraines and emotional instability, though those conditions did not excuse his crimes.
Richard revealed that he had enrolled Daniel after being told the treatment was safe.
Claire Laurent discovered the truth and tried to protect the children.
She had copied the patient list.
Mercer killed her to recover it.
But Claire had hidden one copy inside Sophie’s childhood music box.
Sophie returned home and broke open the false wooden base.
The complete patient list was there.
There were forty-seven names.
Some had died young.
Others had spent decades with undiagnosed illnesses.
The evidence transformed the case.
Brightwell’s remaining assets were frozen and redirected toward victim compensation.
Olivia lost nearly everything.
Her mansion, investments and company shares were sold.
Reporters called it the collapse of a dynasty.
Olivia moved into a modest apartment.
Sophie visited her there one evening.
“Do you regret confessing?” Sophie asked.
Olivia looked around the nearly empty room.
“I regret that the truth cost other people so much before it cost me anything.”
Daniel later requested a meeting with both women.
He wanted to testify against surviving members of Marcus’s network.
When Olivia entered the prison medical ward, Daniel seemed changed.
But she no longer trusted appearances.
“I saved you at the terminal,” he said.
“Yes.”
“Does that mean nothing?”
“It means you made one right choice after a hundred cruel ones.”
Daniel’s eyes filled with tears.
“I loved you.”
Olivia leaned closer.
“You studied my medication, forged my signature and watched a poisoned spoon move toward my mouth.”
She stood.
“Whatever you felt, it was not love.”
As she turned away, Daniel called after Sophie.
“Marcus told me your mother was alive.”
Sophie stopped.
May you like
Daniel smiled weakly.
“He said Mercer never killed Claire.”
