Chapter 10: The Keeper of Arthur's Secret

Someone was still alive inside Rose House.
Not Adrian.
Not Marissa.
Someone else.
The red emergency lights cast long shadows across Arthur Bennett's journals.
No one moved.
Detective Harris slowly raised his flashlight again, but it refused to turn on.
Whatever had cut the power had affected every battery in the room.
Only the dim crimson glow remained.
Then the hidden door behind the last bookshelf opened.
A woman stepped into the chamber.
She looked to be in her early fifties.
Her gray sweater was stained with dust.
A faded identification badge hung from a chain around her neck.
The photograph had nearly faded away.
But the name remained readable.
Claire Morrison.
Ethan forgot how to breathe.
The name hit him like a physical blow.
His father's assistant.
The woman everyone believed had disappeared the same week Arthur Bennett died.
She looked older.
Thinner.
Deep lines framed her tired eyes.
But Ethan recognized her instantly.
"...Claire?"
The woman studied him for several long seconds.
Then a faint smile appeared.
"You have your mother's eyes."
Ethan took an uncertain step forward.
"They told me you were dead."
Claire gave a weary laugh.
"They told the world many things."
"Most of them were lies."
Daniel quietly positioned himself between Claire and Ethan.
"How do we know we can trust you?"
"You don't."
Claire answered without hesitation.
"But if I wanted you dead, Adrian would already have you."
Silence filled the chamber.
Naomi slowly stepped closer.
"I haven't seen you in eleven years."
"I know."
"You never contacted me."
"I couldn't."
Claire looked toward the ceiling.
"They watched every phone."
"Every bank account."
"Every road leaving this property."
"I survived because they believed I no longer mattered."
Ethan's eyes remained fixed on her.
"My father..."
His voice broke.
"...is he alive?"
Claire didn't answer immediately.
Instead, she walked to one of Arthur's journals and gently rested her hand on its worn leather cover.
"He was."
The single word struck Ethan harder than anything Adrian had said.
"...Was?"
Claire closed her eyes.
"When Adrian showed you the man behind the glass..."
"...he wasn't lying."
"It really was Arthur."
Ethan felt hope slipping away.
"Then where is he now?"
Claire met his gaze.
"He died three days ago."
The room fell silent.
Daniel slowly lowered his head.
Naomi covered her mouth.
Even Harris, who had remained emotionally distant throughout the investigation, looked away.
Ethan stood perfectly still.
He had spent the last two hours believing he might finally see his father again.
Now that hope was gone.
Claire reached into her pocket.
"He knew this day would come."
She held out a small digital recorder.
"He left this for you."
Ethan accepted it carefully.
The display showed only one recording.
Arthur Bennett – Final Message
His thumb hovered over the PLAY button.
He hesitated.
Claire nodded gently.
"You should hear him."
The recording began.
Static filled the room.
Then Arthur's voice emerged.
Older.
Weaker.
But unmistakably his.
Ethan...
If you're listening to this, then I wasn't strong enough to wait for you.
Ethan closed his eyes.
For a moment, he was no longer standing beneath Rose House.
He was eight years old again, sitting beside his father on the porch, listening to that same calm voice explain that courage was not the absence of fear.
It was choosing to do the right thing despite it.
Arthur continued.
First...
I need you to forgive yourself.
None of this is your fault.
I kept too many secrets.
I believed I could protect you by keeping you away.
I was wrong.
The recording paused briefly.
Arthur took a slow, painful breath.
Adrian is guilty of terrible things.
But he is not the man who ordered Project Rose to continue.
He tried to stop it.
Everyone in the chamber looked at one another.
Naomi whispered, "I knew it..."
Arthur continued.
When he refused to continue the experiments...
they destroyed his career.
Then they destroyed his family.
Finally...
they gave him a choice.
Work for them...
or disappear forever.
Claire quietly wiped a tear from her cheek.
Ethan listened without blinking.
If Adrian is still alive...
remember this.
A prisoner sometimes wears a lab coat instead of chains.
The recording ended with several seconds of silence.
Then Arthur spoke once more.
Save Lily.
She carries the only proof they could never erase.
The file ended.
No farewell.
No goodbye.
Only one final request.
Ethan looked up slowly.
"What proof?"
Claire answered.
"Rachel never hid the evidence in a computer."
"She hid it in Lily's memory."
Naomi frowned.
"She was only a child."
"Exactly."
Claire nodded.
"No one searches a frightened little girl for information she doesn't know she's carrying."
Harris crossed his arms.
"Explain."
"Rachel created a memory game."
Claire walked toward one of Arthur's journals and removed an old drawing tucked between its pages.
It showed a child coloring a garden filled with roses.
At first glance, it looked ordinary.
Then Ethan noticed tiny numbers hidden inside the flower petals.
Coordinates.
Dates.
Passwords.
Rachel had disguised critical information as part of Lily's favorite drawing activity.
Claire smiled sadly.
"Lily thought it was just something she and her mother did together."
"But every picture she colored helped Rachel store another piece of evidence."
Naomi stared at the page.
"So Lily isn't remembering documents..."
"...she's remembering patterns."
Claire nodded.
"And Adrian knows it."
A sudden vibration shook the chamber.
Dust drifted from the stone ceiling.
Daniel immediately looked toward the tunnel entrance.
"That wasn't the building settling."
Another tremor followed.
Stronger this time.
Harris's radio crackled for the first time in nearly an hour.
A frightened voice burst through the static.
"Detective!"
"This is Officer Reynolds!"
"We've got multiple explosions above ground!"
"The entire north wing of Rose House is on fire!"
Daniel looked toward Harris.
"They're destroying the upper levels."
Claire's face turned pale.
"No..."
"They've started the purge."
"What purge?" Ethan demanded.
Claire pointed toward the journals surrounding them.
"When they realize you reached Archive C..."
"...they burn everything."
A deep mechanical alarm suddenly echoed throughout the underground complex.
Unlike the earlier announcements, this voice sounded cold and automated.
Emergency Protocol Activated.
Archive Destruction Sequence Initiated.
Estimated Time Until Incineration: Fifteen Minutes.
Every face in the chamber turned toward the shelves.
Thousands of Arthur Bennett's journals.
Rachel's hidden records.
Decades of evidence.
Everything they had risked their lives to find.
Claire looked directly at Ethan.
"There isn't enough time to save it all."
Ethan slowly scanned the room.
His father's journals.
Rachel's evidence.
The drawing.
The recorder.
Somewhere above them, Lily was still in danger.
He took a deep breath.
Then made the hardest decision of his life.
"We don't save the documents."
Everyone stared at him.
"We save Lily."
Before anyone could respond, Adrian's voice came over the speakers one last time.
"Good choice, Ethan."
A hidden wall slid open at the far end of the chamber.
Beyond it stood Lily.
She was alone.
No restraints.
No guards.
She looked frightened.
But she wasn't looking at Ethan.
She was looking behind him.
"Ethan..."
she whispered.
"Don't turn around."
Every instinct told him to ignore her.
But something in her voice froze him where he stood.
Then he heard it.
A slow clap.
One.
Then another.
Someone else had entered the chamber without making a sound.
May you like
And this person...
wasn't Adrian Vale.
