The Girl in the Wheelchair Held the One Secret They Were Willing to Kill For

"Please... stop."

The little girl's voice was barely audible beneath the hiss of the garden hose.

She sat trembling in her wheelchair in the middle of the soaked driveway, drenched from her hair to her sneakers.

Her faded light-blue dress clung to her small shoulders.

Water streamed down her frightened, tear-stained face as she gripped the armrests so tightly her knuckles turned white, struggling to keep from sobbing.

A woman stood only a few feet away, holding the hose as though she had done absolutely nothing wrong.

Then a black SUV screeched to a stop at the curb.

A man in a black suit burst out and sprinted toward them.

"Turn it off!"

He yanked the hose away and aimed the spray toward the ground.

Water slammed against the pavement, splashing across his polished dress shoes.

The woman's expression tightened.

"She needed to be cleaned."

The man stared at her in stunned disbelief.

For a long moment, he couldn't comprehend that another human being had actually said those words.

"Listen to yourself," he said quietly, his voice shaking with restrained anger.

Then he slowly knelt in front of the little girl.

His expression softened instantly.

"Hey... I'm here now."

The little girl looked up through her wet eyelashes, struggling to catch her breath between broken sobs.

Her fingers tightened around the wheelchair's armrests.

Then, slowly...

Painfully...

She pushed herself upward.

Her knees shook uncontrollably.

Her soaked sneakers slipped slightly against the wet pavement.
