Chapter 2 - The Emergency Room

The ambulance doors slammed shut.

I climbed inside beside Emma.

One medic began chest compressions.

Another pushed emergency medication through a tiny IV.

"Come on, sweetheart."

"Stay with us."

Emma's eyelids fluttered.

Then closed.

Every instinct inside me screamed.

The ambulance sped through traffic.

Its sirens scattered cars in every direction.

I held Emma's tiny hand.

It felt impossibly cold.

Thirty minutes later...

Doctors burst through the emergency room doors with a pediatric trauma team.

They rushed Emma away before I could say another word.

The operating room doors closed.

The silence afterward was unbearable.

I stood alone in the hallway.

My shirt was stained with sweat.

Dust.

Blood.

And tiny fingerprints.

Officer Brooks approached quietly.

"We've secured the scene."

I nodded.

He handed me a sealed evidence bag.

Inside lay the brass chain.

"I thought you should know."

"Our crime scene investigators found blood on the links."

"My daughter's?"

"We don't know yet."

"But we also found skin."

He paused.

"Human skin."

A nurse interrupted us.

"Mr. Carter?"

I hurried toward her.

"Is she okay?"

"The doctors stabilized her heartbeat."

Relief nearly knocked me to my knees.

"But..."

My stomach tightened.

"She suffered severe compression around the chest."

The nurse lowered her voice.

"If she'd remained outside another ten or fifteen minutes..."

She didn't finish.

She didn't need to.

Across town...

Detectives executed a search warrant on Diana Harrington's property.

They expected photographs.

Medical records.

Perhaps written punishment logs.

Instead...

They found something else.

Locked inside a basement cabinet were dozens of children's belongings.

Tiny shoes.

Backpacks.

Favorite stuffed animals.

Drawings.

Birthday cards.

Everything carefully labeled with names.

Some belonged to children who had attended Diana's private childcare program years earlier.

Detective Harper stared at the shelves.

"This isn't normal."

Another detective opened a thick ledger.

Inside were handwritten notes.

Every child.

Every punishment.

Every infraction.

Every hour.

Every meal withheld.

Every timeout extended.

Every humiliation recorded with chilling precision.

Then one page caught his attention.

Emma Carter.

Age: Seven.

Heart condition.

Requires medication every afternoon.

A sentence had been written beneath it in red ink.

Ignore doctor's instructions.

She exaggerates for attention.

Detective Harper slowly closed the notebook.

"Get a warrant for every record this woman has."

"I want every family contacted."

That evening...

The local television stations interrupted regular programming.

Breaking News.

A respected childcare provider had been arrested after a medically fragile child was found chained to a front porch during extreme heat.

The story spread across social media within hours.

Thousands of comments appeared.

Then...

One message arrived at the police department.

It contained no name.

Only six words.

She finally got caught.

Check the old firehouse.
