Chapter 1 - The Ambulance

Mrs. Gable held Emma as though letting go for even a second would cost the little girl her life.
The tiny cardiac monitor continued screaming against Emma's chest.
Its frantic beeping echoed through the quiet suburban street.
Neighbors poured out of their homes one by one.
Some covered their mouths.
Others pulled out their phones.
No one could believe what they were seeing.
The heavy brass chain lay twisted across the porch floor.
The broken padlock rested only inches from Diana Harrington's polished shoes.
Diana struggled to sit up.
Blood trickled from the corner of her mouth.
She stared at me with a mixture of outrage and disbelief.
"You assaulted me."
Her voice trembled.
"You'll go to prison for this."
I never looked at her.
My attention never left Emma.
Her breathing was shallow.
Her skin had become frighteningly pale.
"Stay with me, sweetheart."
I brushed sweaty strands of hair away from her face.
"Look at Daddy."
Emma tried to smile.
It barely reached her lips.
"I'm tired..."
My heart nearly stopped.
"No."
I squeezed her tiny hand.
"You stay awake."
"You hear me?"
"You stay with me."
The distant wail of sirens finally reached the neighborhood.
Within seconds an ambulance skidded to a stop in front of the house.
Paramedics rushed toward us carrying emergency equipment.
One knelt beside Emma.
The other examined the bruises spreading beneath her collarbone where the chain had pressed against her chest.
"What happened?"
I answered without taking my eyes off my daughter.
"She was chained to that porch."
The paramedic froze.
"For how long?"
Mrs. Gable answered through tears.
"Almost three hours."
The medic looked at the temperature display mounted inside the ambulance.
"Ninety-five degrees."
He immediately called for additional equipment.
"We have a pediatric cardiac patient suffering heat exposure."
Another paramedic carefully removed Emma's shirt just enough to inspect the medical device beneath it.
His expression changed instantly.
"Congenital heart disease."
He looked directly at me.
"She's lucky you got here when you did."
Lucky.
The word felt hollow.
Five minutes later...
She might not have been.
Behind us Diana began shouting.
"He's lying."
"That child is manipulative."
"She deserved punishment."
Several neighbors turned toward her.
None of them spoke.
Their silence said more than words ever could.
A police cruiser arrived.
Then another.
Officer Daniel Brooks stepped onto the porch.
He looked from the broken chain...
To Emma...
Then to Diana.
"What exactly happened here?"
Mrs. Gable raised her trembling hand.
"I saw everything."
Another voice answered from across the street.
"So did I."
Then another.
"And I have security cameras."
Within seconds five different neighbors volunteered to give statements.
For the first time...
Diana looked nervous.
Officer Brooks slowly picked up the broken brass chain using gloved hands.
He stared at the marks still visible on the metal.
Then he looked at Emma's chest.
His jaw tightened.
"Ma'am."
He faced Diana.
"I'm going to ask you one question."
She folded her arms.
"What?"
"Why was this child restrained outside?"
Diana smiled.
Because she believed she was still in control.
"Discipline."
Officer Brooks didn't write anything.
He simply looked at her.
"That's your official answer?"
"Yes."
She nodded confidently.
"A stubborn child must learn consequences."
The officer quietly closed his notebook.
He turned toward another deputy.
"Place her in handcuffs."
The smile disappeared from Diana's face.
"What?"
"You heard me."
She stepped backward.
"You can't arrest me."
Officer Brooks' voice remained calm.
"You are under arrest pending investigation for felony child abuse."
Diana's face turned ghostly white.
"You don't understand who I am."
Officer Brooks answered without emotion.
"I don't care."
As the handcuffs clicked shut...
Emma's monitor suddenly emitted one long continuous tone.
The paramedics moved instantly.
May you like
"She's crashing!"
Everything exploded into chaos.
