Chapter 12 - THE REAL ARCHITECT
Rebecca’s recording changed everything.
Charles Sterling had been cruel.
But Margaret had built the system that protected him.
She bribed doctors.
Police officers.
Employees.
Attorneys.
When Charles died, Margaret continued the network.
Rebecca discovered it.
So had Clara.
So had my mother.
Each woman had been threatened into silence.
One disappeared.
One died.
One spent years hiding.
And Rebecca had been killed.
Margaret was no helpless widow protecting her husband’s reputation.
She had been the architect.
But Jonathan still possessed documents capable of destroying the prosecution.
Detective Brooks believed he would try to leave the country.
He did not.
Instead, he went back to Sterling Manor.
Security cameras caught him entering through the tunnel.
William wanted to confront him.
Police refused.
Then Ethan said something unexpected.
“There’s another door.”
He showed Brooks a drawing.
The tunnel beneath the manor connected to an abandoned greenhouse.
Officers surrounded both exits.
Jonathan emerged carrying gasoline.
He intended to burn the manor.
And everything still hidden inside it.
William confronted him from behind police lines.
“Rebecca trusted you.”
Jonathan smiled.
“That was her mistake.”
“You killed her.”
“She should have accepted the life she had.”
William lunged forward.
Officers stopped him.
Jonathan raised a lighter.
“You Sterlings think money makes you immortal.”
William stared at him.
“No.”
“My family thought silence did.”
Jonathan dropped the lighter.
Brooks tackled him before the flame reached the gasoline.
The arrest should have ended everything.
But while police searched him, they found a handwritten list.
Seven names.
Six had been crossed out.
The final name remained.
ETHAN STERLING.
Beside it was a date.
Tomorrow.
Jonathan looked at William and smiled.
“You still don’t understand.”
