Chapter 11 - THE NIGHT REBECCA DIED
William had seen my mother that night.
He had never known her name.
He remembered a woman arguing with Rebecca near the driveway.
Later, police told him she was a witness who had left before the accident.
“I didn’t know she was your mother.”
“Why didn’t you tell Brooks?”
“I didn’t remember until I saw her photograph.”
Clara filled in the missing pieces.
Elena had gone to warn Rebecca.
Jonathan was coming.
Margaret had discovered their investigation.
Rebecca refused to leave without Ethan.
He was only one year old.
Before Elena could help her escape, Jonathan arrived.
Rebecca fell from the balcony later that night.
Elena witnessed enough to know the fall was not accidental.
She ran because Jonathan threatened Claire.

My mother stayed silent to keep me alive.
But she preserved the evidence.
Detective Brooks reopened Rebecca’s case.
Jonathan became the primary suspect.
Margaret was arrested for conspiracy, obstruction, kidnapping-related offenses, and decades of financial crimes.
Her attorneys insisted she was an elderly woman being persecuted by her own family.
Then Clara testified.
Isabella testified.
And the recordings spoke louder than everyone.
Still, Jonathan remained missing.
For three days, nothing happened.
Then William received a package.
Inside was Ethan’s favorite toy dinosaur.
It had disappeared from the manor.
There was also a note.
THE CHILD KNOWS WHERE REBECCA HID THE ORIGINAL.
William immediately called police.
Ethan was moved to a secure location.
That evening, I sat with him while he colored.
“Ethan.”
He looked up.
“Did your mom hide something else?”
He nodded.
“Where?”
He drew a tree.
Then a lake.
Then a house.
“Mommy said if the bad people came back, Dad should look where she taught me to swim.”
William stared at the picture.
“The lake house.”
We left before sunrise with Detective Brooks and a police team.
Behind the old boathouse was a dock.
William remembered Rebecca teaching Ethan to splash there as a baby.
A loose board concealed a waterproof case.
Inside was a small video camera.
William pressed play.
Rebecca appeared.
“If you’re watching this, I probably didn’t make it.”
William closed his eyes.
Rebecca continued.
“Jonathan Pierce is working with Margaret.”
Then she looked directly into the camera.
“And if they tell you Charles started all of this, they’re lying.”
