CHAPTER 3 — THE SECRET BEHIND THE CALDWELL NAME

Nobody moved.

Nobody even whispered.

Because when powerful people start exposing each other, everyone listens.

James Caldwell stood beneath the chandelier lights, looking nothing like the confident man who had arrived earlier.

He looked tired.

Like someone who had carried a secret for too long.

Celeste stepped toward him.

“James, don’t.”

Her voice was different now.

Not angry.

Afraid.

Walter noticed immediately.

Fear was the one emotion Celeste could never hide.

Richard crossed his arms.

“Let him speak.”

James looked at Lena.

Then at Walter.

“Ten years ago, my sister destroyed someone’s life.”

Celeste’s face became pale.

“Stop.”

But James continued.

“She wasn’t always rich.”

The guests exchanged confused looks.

“Before the Caldwell name became powerful, there was a young employee named Emily.”

Lena frowned.

“Emily?”

James nodded.

“She worked at one of our properties.”

He looked down.

“She discovered financial fraud.”

The room went silent.

Walter’s eyes narrowed.

“Your sister knew?”

James nodded.

“She knew everything.”

Celeste finally exploded.

“You’re blaming me because some employee couldn’t keep quiet?”

Richard’s expression hardened.

“There it is.”

The room turned.

Because everyone heard it.

The arrogance.

The lack of regret.

James continued.

“Emily tried to report it.”

“What happened?” Walter asked.

James hesitated.

“She was fired.”

Lena looked shocked.

“And nobody helped her?”

James looked away.

“No.”

The answer hurt more than anything.

Because everyone understood.

A powerful family had protected itself.

At the expense of someone powerless.

Walter looked at Celeste.

“So this is what you do.”

Celeste stared at him.

“What?”

“You don’t attack people because they are wrong.”

Walter’s voice became stronger.

“You attack them because they are weak enough that you think nobody will defend them.”

The words hit harder than shouting.

Celeste looked around.

For the first time...

Nobody was on her side.

Then Richard received a message.

He read it.

His expression changed.

Lena noticed.

“What happened?”

Richard looked at her.

“It’s about Emily.”

The room became silent again.

“What about her?”

Richard slowly turned the phone around.

On the screen was a photo.

A woman.

Older now.

But recognizable.

Lena’s face changed.

May you like

Because she knew her.

“That’s my mother.”
