CHAPTER 2 — The Monster Behind the Perfect Smile

Nathan Harrington stood frozen at the bottom of the basement stairs.
For twelve years, he believed he knew his wife.
Victoria Harrington.
The woman who appeared on magazine covers.
The woman who donated millions to children’s charities.
The woman who smiled beside him at every business gala and told the world that family was everything.
But the woman standing in front of him now…
was someone else.
The silence was unbearable.
The children didn’t move.
They barely breathed.
Nathan slowly looked from Victoria to the three terrified faces sitting on the cold concrete floor.
His voice came out low.
“What is this?”
Victoria swallowed.
For the first time in years, she looked afraid.
“Nathan… you don’t understand.”
He stared at the leather riding crop on the floor.
Then at his children’s thin pajamas.
Then at the marks of fear in their eyes.
“No.”
His voice became colder.
“I understand exactly what I’m seeing.”
Victoria took one step forward.
“Nathan, listen to me. They were misbehaving. They needed discipline.”
The oldest boy immediately shook his head.
“No, Daddy…”
His tiny voice cracked.
“She locked us here.”
Nathan’s heart broke.
Not because he was hearing something unbelievable.
Because deep inside…
he already knew.
He turned toward his son.
“Come here.”
The little boy hesitated.
His eyes moved toward Victoria.
That small movement told Nathan everything.
His son was not afraid of punishment.
He was afraid of permission.
Slowly, Nathan walked forward.
Victoria tried to stop him.
“Nathan, don’t make a scene.”
He stopped.
Then looked at her.
A billionaire who had negotiated with presidents and defeated corporate enemies without hesitation…
looked at his wife like she was the most dangerous person he had ever faced.
“A scene?”
His voice trembled with controlled anger.
“You locked our children in a basement.”
Victoria’s expression hardened.
“You don’t know what it’s like being their mother.”
Nathan stared at her.
“No.”
A pause.
“I know what it’s like being their father.”
He removed his expensive jacket and wrapped it around his daughter’s shoulders.
The little girl immediately grabbed onto him.
And for the first time that night…
Nathan felt her shaking stop.
That broke something inside him.
He carried the children upstairs.
But before leaving, he turned back.
“Victoria.”
She looked at him.
“We’re not finished.”
Twenty minutes later, the mansion was filled with police officers.
The same mansion that had hosted charity events.
The same mansion where politicians and celebrities had walked through the front doors.
Now had flashing blue lights outside.
Victoria sat in the living room, perfectly composed.
Almost too composed.
Her lawyer arrived quickly.
Of course he did.
Nathan expected nothing less.
But what Victoria didn’t know…
was that Nathan had already started looking for answers.
Because one question haunted him.
How long had this been happening?
The next morning, Nathan sat in his private office.
His children were sleeping safely in guest rooms under the care of a trusted nanny.
On his desk were years of documents.
Medical records.
School reports.
Family photographs.
And something that made his hands tighten.
A hidden file.
Found inside Victoria’s locked cabinet.
The title was simple.
“Behavior Correction Program.”
Nathan opened it.
His blood ran cold.
Inside were detailed notes about his own children.
Every mistake.
Every fear.
Every punishment.
Written in Victoria’s handwriting.
Then he found the final page.
A note dated three years earlier.
Subject: Remove emotional attachment. Increase obedience.
Nathan closed his eyes.
Three years.
She had been doing this for three years.
And he had been away building his empire.
Thinking he was protecting his family.
While his family was suffering inside his own home.
Then his phone rang.
Unknown number.
Nathan answered.
A woman’s voice whispered.
“Mr. Harrington…”
“Who is this?”
A pause.
“I used to work for your wife.”
Nathan sat straighter.
“What do you mean?”
The woman took a shaky breath.
“Your children are not Victoria’s only victims.”
Silence.
“There were others.”
Nathan’s expression changed.
“Who?”
The woman whispered:
“Ask Victoria what happened to her first child.”
The call ended.
Nathan slowly lowered the phone.
May you like
Because suddenly…
the secret beneath the mansion was much bigger than he imagined.
