Chapter 3: The Truth Comes Out

Megan spent the next week preparing quietly.
She contacted her own attorney.
She copied every document.
Every email.
Every hidden conversation.
Every financial record.
Ryan believed she was falling apart.
That was his mistake.
He had confused silence with weakness.
One evening, Brooke arrived at the house.
For the first time since the betrayal, Megan allowed her inside.
Brooke looked different.
No confidence.
No excuses.
Just fear.
"Megan..."
"Sit down."
Brooke obeyed.
The woman who once walked into Megan’s home without knocking now looked like a stranger.
"How long?" Megan asked.
Brooke looked away.
"How long were you with him?"
The silence answered first.
"Six months."
Megan closed her eyes.
Six months.
Six months of family dinners.
Six months of pretending.
Six months of Brooke touching her pregnant belly while hiding the truth.
"Did Ryan ask you to help him?"
Brooke’s face changed.
That was the answer.
"He said you were going to leave him."
Megan stared.
"He told me you didn't love him anymore. He said you were planning to take everything."
A cold feeling moved through Megan.
"He lied to both of us."
Brooke started crying.
"I thought we were going to be together."
Megan looked at her sister.
Not with anger.
With disappointment.
"You weren't in love with him."
Brooke looked up.
"You were in love with the life you thought he could give you."
The words destroyed Brooke more than any scream could have.
Then Megan placed a folder on the table.
"Read it."
Brooke opened it.
Her expression changed page by page.
The custody plan.
The legal strategy.
The manipulation.
The truth.
"He was going to take your baby?"
Megan nodded.
Brooke covered her mouth.
"I didn't know."
"I believe you didn't know everything."
Megan stood.
"But you knew enough to betray me."
Brooke cried harder.
And for the first time, Megan saw the truth.
Brooke had been used too.
But being used did not erase what she had done.
Two days later, Ryan’s entire plan collapsed.
His lawyer received the evidence.
The court received the evidence.
The financial investigators received the evidence.
The man who believed he controlled everything suddenly had nothing.
When Ryan confronted Megan outside the courthouse, he was no longer confident.
"You ruined me."
Megan looked at him calmly.
"No."
She held her pregnancy folder against her chest.
"You ruined yourself when you thought I was too broken to fight back."
Ryan stepped closer.
"You still love me."
Megan shook her head.
"No."
A pause.
May you like
"I loved the man I thought you were."
Then she walked away.
