Chapter 1 - The Blood on the Silk

The crack of Marcella’s palm against bone echoed over the string quartet like a gunshot.

Vivia didn’t even have time to scream. Her head snapped violently to the right, her vision exploding into bursts of white light before her knees gave out beneath her. The polished Italian marble of the estate dining hall caught her hard, sending a shudder up her spine. Shards of crystal from a knocked-over water goblet bit into her palms, but she barely felt the sting. Her fingers clamped down with white-knuckled desperation on the frayed, yellowing silk bunched against her ribs.

"Look at yourself," Marcella hissed, leaning down into Vivia’s face. The heavy scent of designer perfume and vintage champagne rolled off her in suffocating waves. "You’re an embarrassment. That rag belongs in an incinerator, not at a five-million-dollar rehearsal dinner."

A hush swept through the eighty high-society guests seated around the banquet tables. Silverware froze mid-air. Diamond-encrusted socialites exchanged glances behind their manicured hands, but nobody moved. Nobody ever crossed Marcella Vance. Not when she held the board votes, and certainly not when she was in one of her ruthless moods.

Vivia tasted iron on her tongue. Her cheek felt like raw fire, swelling fast against the cold floor. She couldn’t stand; her ankle had twisted in the fall. Panting, she dragged herself across the slick stone, her fingernails scraping the grout as she pulled her weight toward the head of the long mahogany table.

There sat Nico.

He hadn't moved an inch during the blow. Tall, broad-shouldered, and immaculately tailored in an all-black suit, he looked like a statue carved out of granite. His amber eyes stared straight ahead, dark and unreadable, his jaw clenched so tightly the muscles jumped along his cheek.

Vivia reached out a trembling, blood-streaked hand and gripped the hem of his trouser leg.

"Nico, please," Vivia choked out, her voice ragged and breathless. Tears cut clean tracks through the dust on her face. "Mom told me... before the hospice nurse kicked me out... she said never let them touch this dress. She said it was the only thing that could save you."

Marcella took two sharp, clicking strides in her red-soled stilettos, reaching down with talons manicured in deep crimson to tear the fabric from Vivia’s chest. "Give it here, you little parasite!"

She never touched it.

Nico’s left hand shot out like an iron vice, locking around Marcella’s wrist mid-air. The force of his grip pulled her forward so fast she nearly lost her footing.

With a smooth, terrifyingly calm motion, Nico stood. He stepped over Vivia’s trembling body, putting his wide frame between the two women like an impenetrable wall.

"Nico, let go of me!" Marcella snapped, her voice cracking in sudden outrage. "She’s humiliating our entire family in front of our investors! Let go—"

Nico didn’t argue. He didn’t raise his voice. He simply drew his right hand back and delivered one brutal, devastating open-handed strike across Marcella’s cheek.

The impact was deafening. Marcella’s head whipped sideways, her hair pins flying loose. The momentum spun her around and threw her violently backward into the lavish dessert display. The entire six-tier centerpiece collapsed. Vintage crystal flutes shattered on impact, spraying Moët and crushed spun sugar across the pristine white linen as she hit the floor in a heap of designer chiffon.

The dining hall erupted into screams and scraping chairs.

"Jesus Christ, Nico!" his younger brother Rafe yelled, jumping up from the far end of the table and rushing forward.

Nico stood over his sister, breathing evenly, his gaze stone-cold. "Touch her again, Marcella, and I won't use an open hand."

Marcella groaned, clutching her bruised jaw as she scrambled backward against the ruined table. As she had fallen, her diamond ring had hooked into the hem of the antique dress Vivia was clutching, ripping the dry, vintage silk clean down the inner seam.

A sound—a hollow, plastic click—rattled against the marble floor.

Two objects slipped out of the shredded lining: a heavy, black waterproof USB drive wrapped in electrical tape, and a small, folded piece of yellowed parchment marked with their mother’s unmistakable, sharp handwriting.

Nico froze.

The color instantly drained from Marcella’s face. The haughty, untouchable heiress was suddenly gone; her eyes widened in pure, visceral terror. Forgetting the pain in her jaw, she scrambled on all fours, lunging across the glass shards straight for the drive.

"Rafe, grab it!" she shrieked, voice pitch-high with panic.

Rafe didn’t grab it for her. He stepped directly onto Marcella’s outstretched hand, pinning her fingers to the floor just inches away from the drive. "Don't move, Marcella."

"Nico... Nico, listen to me!" Marcella pleaded, her voice trembling now, all arrogance shattered. "Burn it right now! Don't look at it! If you plug that into a computer, you destroy everything Dad built! You destroy the entire family!"

Nico slowly knelt down. He picked up the cold, black drive and unfolded the damp paper with two fingers.

His eyes scanned the single sentence written on the page: If you are reading this, your father did not die of a heart attack, and Marcella was the last person in his room.

Nico looked up from the note, his gaze locking onto his sister’s pale, sweat-sheened face.

"You were never angry about the dress," Nico whispered, his voice dangerously quiet. "You were terrified of what Mom hid inside it."

Before Marcella could speak, the heavy double doors of the banquet hall slammed open, and four armed private security officers in tactical gear walked in, their weapons drawn.
