Chapter 8 - GRANDMOTHER’S RIGHTS

Maya was in the car before anyone could stop her.
Ryan followed.
Shaw shouted for an officer to drive them.
The trip back to St. Matthew’s felt endless.
Ryan called hospital security repeatedly.
No answer.
Then finally someone picked up.
“Security.”
“This is Ryan Whitmore.”
“Where is my son?”
“Mr. Whitmore—”
“Where is Oliver?”
“He is safe.”
Ryan closed his eyes.
Maya grabbed his arm.
“What happened?”
Ryan put the call on speaker.
The security officer continued.
“Mrs. Evelyn Whitmore arrived approximately twelve minutes ago.”
“How did she get upstairs?”
“She presented legal documents.”
Ryan looked at Shaw.
“What legal documents?”
“A temporary visitation order.”
Maya’s face twisted.
“That is impossible.”
Ryan’s voice sharpened.
“She is under investigation for taking his medication.”
“The order states she is permitted supervised access while the family court reviews the allegations.”
Maya stared in disbelief.
“Who signed it?”
The officer gave a judge’s name.
Shaw frowned.
“I know that judge.”
Ryan turned.
“Is that bad?”
“It’s unusual.”
“How unusual?”
“She doesn’t usually handle emergency family petitions.”
Ryan felt his stomach turn.
“Jonathan?”
Shaw did not answer.
They arrived at the hospital.
Ryan ran through the lobby.
Maya followed.
Two officers met them at the elevator.
“Where is she?”
Ryan demanded.
“Family consultation room.”
“Why?”
“She requested to speak with hospital administration.”
“About Oliver?”
“Yes.”
Ryan entered the room without knocking.
Evelyn sat at the conference table.
Gray suit gone.
Now she wore a dark blue dress.
Her hair remained perfect.
Her attorney sat beside her.
A hospital administrator sat across from them.
Evelyn looked up.
“Ryan.”
Maya entered behind him.
Evelyn’s eyes moved toward her.
The contempt was immediate.
Then she smiled.
“Maya.”
Ryan stepped between them.
“Leave.”
Evelyn remained seated.
“I have a court order.”
“I don’t care.”
“You should.”
Ryan slammed the document on the table.
“You took his inhaler.”
Evelyn looked toward her attorney.
The man spoke.
“My client denies intentionally depriving the child of necessary medication.”
Ryan laughed.
“There’s video.”
“The recording shows a family dispute.”
“It shows her taking the inhaler.”
“It does not establish intent to harm.”
Maya stared at him.
“She refused to give it back while he couldn’t breathe.”
The attorney remained calm.
“My client believed Mrs. Whitmore was overmedicating the child.”
Ryan stepped forward.
“That is a lie.”
Evelyn finally spoke.
“Is it?”
Ryan stared.
She continued.
“Oliver’s dosage had been reduced.”
Ryan felt cold.
“You know about Mercer changing it.”
“Dr. Mercer made a medical decision.”
“He’s a psychiatrist.”
Evelyn’s expression barely changed.
“Doctors consult.”
“Not like that.”
Her attorney touched her arm.
Evelyn ignored him.
She looked at Ryan.
“You still don’t understand how much Maya has hidden from you.”
Maya’s face hardened.
“Stop.”
Evelyn smiled.
“Have you told him?”
Ryan turned toward Maya.
“Told me what?”
Maya looked confused.
“Nothing.”
Evelyn leaned back.
“Oh.”
“This should be interesting.”
Ryan looked at his mother.
“What are you talking about?”
Evelyn opened her handbag.
Shaw stepped into the room.
“Do not remove anything.”
Evelyn’s attorney immediately objected.
“My client is not under arrest.”
Shaw did not look at him.
“Put your hands on the table.”
Evelyn slowly obeyed.
The attorney removed an envelope from the bag instead.
He placed it on the table.
“This was intended for Mr. Whitmore.”
Ryan stared.
“What is it?”
The attorney slid the envelope toward him.
Shaw intercepted it.
“Evidence first.”
She opened it carefully.
Inside was a medical report.
Ryan’s expression changed when he read the name.
Maya Ellis Whitmore.
The date was four years earlier.
Before Oliver was born.
Ryan looked at Maya.
She stared at the paper.
“What is that?”
Evelyn smiled.
“You tell him.”
Maya stepped closer.
“I’ve never seen this.”
Ryan scanned the report.
Psychological assessment.
Risk factors.
Mood instability.
Aggression.
Possible personality disorder.
Ryan stopped reading.
“This is fake.”
Evelyn tilted her head.
“Is it?”
Ryan looked at the doctor’s signature.
Andrew Mercer.
He almost laughed.
“You’re using Mercer again.”
Evelyn’s confidence remained.
“The report existed before Oliver.”
Ryan turned to Shaw.
“Can we verify this?”
“Yes.”
Maya stared at Evelyn.
“You created it before we even had a child?”
Evelyn’s smile faded.
“I knew what you were.”
Maya stepped closer.
“What was I?”
“A problem.”
Silence.
Ryan felt something snap.
“You targeted her before Oliver was born.”
Evelyn looked at him.
“I protected our family before she could damage it.”
“Our family?”
Ryan’s voice shook.
“You mean your control.”
Evelyn stood.
Her attorney tried to stop her.
She ignored him.
“You think Maya loves you?”
“Yes.”
“You think she married you because of love?”
“Yes.”
Evelyn laughed.
Ryan stared.
She reached toward the folder.
Shaw blocked her.
Evelyn looked at Ryan.
“Ask her where she worked before she met you.”
Ryan frowned.
Maya’s expression changed slightly.
Ryan noticed.
“Maya?”
Maya exhaled.
“A nonprofit.”
“What nonprofit?”
Evelyn answered.
“The Whitmore Family Foundation.”
Ryan turned.
“What?”
Maya looked at him.
“For six months.”
Ryan stared.
“You never told me.”
“I didn’t think it mattered.”
Evelyn laughed again.
“Of course she didn’t.”
Maya glared.
“I was an assistant.”
“You accessed family records.”
“I scheduled donations.”
“You accessed files.”
“I had access to public grant materials.”
Ryan looked between them.
“What does this have to do with anything?”
Evelyn’s expression became cold.
“Your wife knew who you were before you met.”
Maya shook her head.
“I knew the surname.”
“I didn’t know Ryan personally.”
“You researched him.”
“No.”
“You attended a foundation gala where he was present.”
“I worked the registration table.”
Ryan tried to remember.
Maya and Ryan had officially met months later at a bookstore.
At least—
That was how he remembered it.
Evelyn looked at him.
“Still think it was an accident?”
Ryan’s chest tightened.
Maya stepped toward him.
“It was.”
Ryan looked at her.
“You recognized my name?”
“Yes.”
“Why didn’t you tell me?”
“Because I didn’t want you thinking I cared about your family.”
Evelyn smiled.
“How convenient.”
Maya turned on her.
“You spent years making every coincidence look criminal.”
“Because you always needed Ryan suspicious.”
Ryan watched them.
Evelyn was doing it again.
Planting doubt.
Using fragments of truth.
Creating a larger lie.
He recognized the pattern now.
That recognition saved him.
Ryan looked at Maya.
“Did you know me before the bookstore?”
“No.”
“Did you ever research me?”
“No.”
“Did you marry me because of my family?”
Maya’s eyes filled.
“No.”
Ryan nodded.
“I believe you.”
Evelyn’s face changed.
Only slightly.
But it was there.
She had expected the old Ryan.
The son who hesitated.
The son who needed her version first.
That son was gone.
Ryan looked at his mother.
“Your tricks don’t work anymore.”
Evelyn stared.
“Neither does your money.”
Her attorney stood.
“That’s enough.”
Ryan ignored him.
“Neither do your doctors.”
“Neither do your records.”
“Neither do your lies.”
Evelyn’s expression hardened.
“You have no idea how much you’re about to lose.”
Ryan leaned closer.
“I already lost my father.”
“You made sure of that.”
For the first time, Evelyn looked genuinely shaken.
Her attorney immediately turned.
“Do not respond.”
Ryan saw it.
The name of Richard frightened her.
Ryan stepped closer.
“I found the tape.”
Evelyn froze.
Tiny.
Almost invisible.
But Ryan saw it.
So did Shaw.
“What tape?”
Evelyn asked.
Ryan smiled without humor.
“The one Dad left for me.”
Evelyn’s face drained.
Her attorney stood.
“We’re leaving.”
Shaw stepped between them and the door.
“Not yet.”
“You cannot detain my client.”
“I’m not.”
Shaw looked at Evelyn.
“I’m asking one question.”
Evelyn said nothing.
“Who is Jonathan Whitmore?”
The room went silent.
Maya watched Evelyn’s face.
All color disappeared.
Ryan knew immediately.
Jonathan existed.
Evelyn recovered.
“I have no idea.”
Ryan laughed.
“Too late.”
Evelyn looked at him.
He saw fear.
Real fear.
Then she whispered.
“You went to the old house.”
Ryan’s expression changed.
He had never told her where the tape was found.
Neither had Shaw.
No one at the hospital knew.
Ryan stared.
“How did you know?”
Evelyn realized the mistake.
Her attorney closed his eyes.
Shaw stepped closer.
“Mrs. Whitmore.”
Evelyn grabbed her bag.
“We’re done.”
Ryan blocked the door.
“No.”
Her eyes flashed.
“Move.”
“Who told you?”
“Move.”
“Who told you we went to the house?”
Evelyn stared at him.
Then her phone vibrated inside her bag.
Everyone heard it.
Shaw looked toward the attorney.
“Retrieve the phone.”
He hesitated.
Evelyn held the bag tighter.
The phone vibrated again.
Then again.
Finally Shaw said.
“Mrs. Whitmore, if you believe you have nothing to hide, show us the message.”
Evelyn slowly removed the phone.
The screen lit up.
Ryan could not see the full message.
But he saw the sender.
J.
His heart pounded.
Evelyn immediately locked the screen.
Ryan stared.
“Jonathan?”
Evelyn’s face remained blank.
Her attorney took the phone.
Shaw stepped closer.
“Preserve that device.”
The attorney laughed.
“You’ll need a warrant.”
“I’ll get one.”
Ryan looked at Evelyn.
“You’ve been talking to him.”
Evelyn said nothing.
Then Maya’s phone rang.
She answered.
“Hello?”
Her expression changed.
“What?”
Ryan turned.
Maya covered the speaker.
“It’s Oliver’s nurse.”
Ryan’s heart dropped.
“What happened?”
Maya listened.
Then she looked at him.
“Oliver is gone.”
Silence.
Ryan stared.
“What do you mean gone?”
Maya’s voice broke.
“They moved him for imaging.”
“He never arrived.”
Ryan looked at Evelyn.
Evelyn looked genuinely confused.
That terrified him more than if she had smiled.
May you like
Because for once—
She did not know.
