Chapter 13 - THE SIGNATURE

Police reached the boathouse twelve minutes later.

Evelyn was gone.

Again.

But this time they found her phone.

Broken.

Blood stained the wooden floor.

And Jonathan’s fingerprints were everywhere.

Ryan stayed with Oliver.

He forced himself to.

Every instinct told him to go.

Maya would not let him.

“You are not giving Jonathan another target.”

Ryan looked at her.

“My mother may be dying.”

“And the police are looking for her.”

“She admitted what she did to Dad.”

“I know.”

“She let him die.”

“I know.”

Ryan looked toward Oliver’s room.

His anger collided with something uglier.

Grief.

He hated Evelyn.

But she was still his mother.

The contradiction made him feel sick.

At noon, Shaw arrived.

She carried a folder.

Ryan recognized the expression on her face.

Another problem.

“What now?”

Shaw sat.

“We found the forged signature Evelyn mentioned.”

Ryan’s stomach tightened.

“On what?”

“A transfer authorization.”

She placed it on the table.

The document transferred temporary voting control of Ryan’s Whitmore Trust interest to a management entity.

Ryan read the company name.

Vale Strategic Holdings.

He looked up.

“Thomas?”

“Apparently.”

Ryan frowned.

“But Thomas is in custody.”

“Yes.”

“Then why would Jonathan transfer control to him?”

“Because Vale Strategic Holdings isn’t owned by Thomas Vale.”

Ryan stared.

“Who owns it?”

Shaw slid another page across the table.

Ryan read the name.

Evelyn Whitmore.

Maya stared.

Ryan laughed bitterly.

“My mother.”

“Evelyn created the company twelve years ago.”

Ryan looked at Shaw.

“Then Jonathan was transferring the trust to her?”

“On paper.”

“What does that mean?”

“The company was sold six months ago.”

“To who?”

Shaw turned another page.

Andrew Mercer.

Ryan froze.

“Mercer owns it?”

“Legally.”

Maya frowned.

“Why?”

Shaw leaned back.

“That’s what we couldn’t understand.”

Ryan stared at the papers.

Jonathan.

Evelyn.

Thomas.

Mercer.

Everyone had been moving pieces around.

Everyone seemed to be using everyone else.

Then Ryan saw the date.

The transfer authorization had been signed three weeks earlier.

“Three weeks.”

Shaw nodded.

Ryan looked at Maya.

“That’s before the nursery.”

“Yes.”

“So the nursery wasn’t the trigger.”

“No.”

“It was cleanup.”

Shaw’s expression sharpened.

Ryan continued.

“They already forged my signature.”

“They already had the trust moving.”

“They needed Maya declared unstable and me declared incompetent so nobody could challenge it.”

Maya whispered.

“And Oliver made Evelyn look like the responsible guardian.”

Ryan nodded.

The nursery scene had not been designed merely to take Oliver.

It was designed to complete the story.

Maya unstable.

Ryan psychologically vulnerable.

Evelyn responsible.

Jonathan invisible.

Ryan looked at Shaw.

“Find Mercer.”

“We’re trying.”

“He owns the company controlling my trust.”

“Yes.”

“Then he’s not running from Jonathan.”

Shaw frowned.

Ryan continued.

“He’s running with the money.”

Silence.

Maya understood first.

“Mercer betrayed them.”

Ryan nodded.

“That’s why Jonathan is hunting him.”

Shaw stood.

“I’ll have financial crimes trace everything.”

Ryan looked at the transfer.

“How much?”

“What?”

“How much is the trust worth?”

Shaw hesitated.

Ryan almost laughed.

“Everyone keeps trying to destroy my family over it.”

“I’d like to know the number.”

Shaw looked at him.

“Approximately four hundred and eighty million dollars.”

Silence.

Ryan stared at her.

Maya sat slowly.

“Almost half a billion?”

“Yes.”

Ryan felt nothing.

No excitement.

No shock over the wealth.

Only disgust.

His father died over it.

His grandmother died around it.

His mother destroyed her family for it.

Jonathan spent decades chasing it.

Oliver had been kidnapped because of it.

Ryan pushed the papers away.

“I don’t want it.”

Maya looked at him.

Shaw remained silent.

Ryan repeated himself.

“I don’t want any of it.”

Maya touched his hand.

“You don’t have to decide that today.”

Ryan looked toward Oliver’s room.

“Money that makes people do this isn’t worth having.”

Maya shook her head.

“The money didn’t do this.”

Ryan looked at her.

“They did.”

“Richard had the same money.”

“He tried to protect you.”

“Your grandfather built something.”

“Your grandmother tried to protect it.”

Maya squeezed his hand.

“Don’t give Jonathan what he wants just because he made you hate the thing he wants.”

Ryan stared at her.

She was right.

Again.

His phone rang.

Shaw immediately looked at it.

Unknown number.

Ryan answered on speaker.

“Hello?”

A man breathed heavily.

Then—

“Ryan.”

Andrew Mercer.

Shaw began tracing.

Ryan remained calm.

“Where are you?”

“I need a deal.”

Ryan almost laughed.

“You changed my son’s medication.”

“I was forced.”

“You forged medical records.”

“Evelyn forced me.”

“You helped destroy my father.”

“Jonathan forced me.”

Ryan’s voice became cold.

“Interesting.”

“What?”

“Every person in this story forced you except you.”

Mercer went silent.

Ryan continued.

“What do you want?”

“Protection.”

“From Jonathan?”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“Because I took something.”

Ryan looked at Shaw.

“The trust?”

Mercer breathed.

“Yes.”

“How much?”

“Enough.”

Ryan laughed.

“You stole from people who killed over money.”

“I didn’t think they would know this quickly.”

“Then you’re not as smart as my mother paid you to pretend.”

Mercer’s breathing changed.

“I have evidence.”

“What evidence?”

“Richard’s original medical file.”

Ryan froze.

“I have recordings.”

“Financial records.”

“Everything.”

“Why?”

“Insurance.”

Ryan understood.

Mercer had spent decades keeping evidence against Evelyn and Jonathan.

Not because he had a conscience.

Because he wanted leverage.

“Where is it?”

“I’ll trade it.”

“For what?”

“Immunity.”

Shaw shook her head.

Ryan ignored her.

“I can’t give you immunity.”

“You can get me a prosecutor.”

Ryan looked at Shaw.

She wrote something.

KEEP HIM TALKING.

Ryan nodded.

“Where are you?”

Mercer hesitated.

Then a sound came through the line.

A car door.

Mercer suddenly whispered.

“No.”

Ryan frowned.

“What?”

“He’s here.”

Ryan looked at Shaw.

“Jonathan?”

Mercer began breathing faster.

“How did he find me?”

Ryan stood.

“Where are you?”

Mercer ignored him.

“No.”

“No.”

Then another voice came through.

Calm.

Familiar.

Jonathan.

“Andrew.”

Mercer shouted.

The phone hit something.

Ryan heard movement.

Then Jonathan picked it up.

“Ryan.”

Ryan’s blood ran cold.

“Where’s Evelyn?”

Jonathan laughed.

“Still worried about Mommy?”

“Where is she?”

“Closer than you think.”

Ryan’s jaw tightened.

“What do you want now?”

“The same thing.”

“You already lost.”

“No.”

Jonathan sounded amused.

“You still think this is about a cassette.”

Ryan looked at Shaw.

“What is it about?”

“Succession.”

Ryan frowned.

Jonathan continued.

“You should read the original trust more carefully.”

Ryan looked toward the documents.

“What clause?”

“If the controlling heir dies before formally accepting the succession…”

Ryan stopped breathing.

“…control passes to his biological next of kin.”

Maya went pale.

Ryan whispered.

“You.”

Jonathan laughed.

“Now you understand.”

The line disconnected.

Ryan stared at the phone.

Everything changed again.

Jonathan did not need Ryan incompetent anymore.

Not if Ryan died before formally accepting control.

Ryan looked at Shaw.

“Have I accepted the trust?”

She immediately called the financial attorney.

Ryan waited.

Seconds felt like minutes.

Finally Shaw looked at him.

“No.”

Ryan’s face hardened.

“Then Jonathan doesn’t need my signature.”

“No.”

“He needs me dead.”

Shaw nodded.

Maya looked toward Oliver’s bedroom.

Then Ryan understood something worse.

“If I die…”

Shaw looked at the trust.

“Jonathan becomes the biological next of kin.”

Ryan shook his head.

“No.”

“I have a son.”

Silence.

Shaw froze.

Maya stared at her.

Ryan slowly turned.

“Oliver is my biological next of kin.”

Shaw grabbed the trust document.

She read quickly.

Then her expression changed.

Ryan knew before she spoke.

“The clause says adult next of kin.”

Maya whispered.

“So Jonathan comes first.”

Ryan felt cold.

Then Maya asked—

“What happens to Oliver?”

Nobody answered.

May you like

Because suddenly everyone understood why Jonathan had taken him alive.

And why he might still need him.
