Chapter 12 - THE FORTUNE BENEATH THE FLOOR

The document was an original partnership agreement.

Their grandfather had founded Vance Holdings with another man.

Marcus Bell.

Marcus had owned forty percent.

But after Marcus died unexpectedly, his ownership disappeared from later company records.

Clara read the agreement twice.

Daniel sat across from her.

“So Grandpa stole the company?”

“Possibly.”

Their mother closed her eyes.

“I knew there had been a partner.”

Clara looked at her.

“You knew?”

“Only stories.”

“Your father refused to discuss him.”

Samuel Reed investigated.

Within days, they found Marcus Bell’s descendants.

His granddaughter, Naomi Bell, worked as a public-school principal in Baltimore.

She had no idea her grandfather might have owned part of a company now worth billions.

Daniel stared at Clara.

“What do we do?”

Clara answered immediately.

“We tell her.”

The board opposed it.

Lawyers opposed it.

Advisers warned that acknowledging the agreement could trigger years of litigation.

Clara listened to everyone.

Then she invited Naomi to New York.

Naomi arrived expecting a historical question about her grandfather.

Instead, Clara placed the partnership agreement in front of her.

Naomi read it.

Her hands began trembling.

“My mother grew up poor.”

Clara said nothing.

“My grandmother worked two jobs.”

Naomi looked up.

“And your family had this?”

“We found it three days ago.”

“Did your father know?”

“I don’t know.”

“Did your grandfather?”

“Yes.”

Naomi stood.

Daniel expected anger.

Instead, she walked toward the window.

“My mother died believing her father failed.”

Clara felt the weight of those words.

“What do you want from me?”

Naomi turned.

“The truth.”

Clara nodded.

“You’ll have it.”

The Vance family publicly disclosed everything.

The old fraud.

The hidden partnership.

Edward’s cover-up.

Evelyn’s theft.

Every ugly piece.

The company’s stock dropped eighteen percent in two days.

News organizations attacked.

Commentators predicted collapse.

Daniel entered Clara’s office.

“You could resign.”

“I could.”

“You could walk away with enough money for ten lifetimes.”

“Yes.”

“Are you going to?”

Clara looked at the city below.

“No.”

“Why?”

“Because leaving is easy.”

“Fixing what our family broke is harder.”

Daniel smiled faintly.

“There’s my terrifying sister.”

Negotiations with Naomi began.

Instead of fighting the Bell family, Clara proposed restitution and a significant ownership settlement.

The board nearly revolted.

Clara threatened to replace them.

They stopped revolting.

Meanwhile, Evelyn was charged with fraud, conspiracy, kidnapping, attempted assault, and several financial crimes.

The investigation into Edward’s death continued.

Then prosecutors found the final evidence.

A pharmacy employee admitted Evelyn had paid him for additional tablets of Edward’s medication.

Combined with Victoria’s recordings and hotel evidence, prosecutors charged Evelyn with Edward Vance’s murder.

Daniel cried when Clara told him.

Not loudly.

Not dramatically.

He simply sat down and covered his face.

Clara sat beside him.

They stayed that way for a long time.

Finally Daniel whispered.

“We finally know.”

“Yes.”

May you like

But one question remained.

What would happen to Victoria?
