Chapter 11 - THE LAKE HOUSE

Clara wanted to go alone.

Nathan refused.

Daniel refused more loudly.

The authorities refused most loudly of all.

So they made a plan.

Clara would enter the lake house.

A tactical team would remain nearby.

She wore a hidden microphone beneath her jacket.

Daniel stayed in the command vehicle.

Before Clara left, he grabbed her hand.

“Bring Mom home.”

Clara squeezed his fingers.

“I will.”

The lake house stood beside dark water surrounded by pine trees.

Clara entered through the front door.

“Evelyn?”

Her aunt appeared near the fireplace.

“Take off your jacket.”

Clara obeyed.

“Lift your shirt.”

Clara hesitated.

Evelyn smiled.

“I know Nathan.”

“I know how your security works.”

Clara removed the microphone.

Evelyn smashed it.

Outside, Daniel cursed.

The connection died.

Clara looked around.

“Where is Mom?”

“Safe.”

“Show me.”

Evelyn pointed upstairs.

Their mother sat tied to a chair.

Alive.

Clara exhaled.

Evelyn held a pistol.

“You always thought you were better than me.”

“No.”

“Your father did.”

“He chose you.”

“He trusted you.”

“He gave you everything.”

Clara stared at her.

“You stole sixty-eight million dollars.”

“I took what belonged to me.”

“No.”

“You took what you wanted.”

Evelyn’s hand trembled.

“Dad built that company with Edward.”

“And then Edward inherited control because he was the son.”

“I received scraps.”

“So you spent decades punishing his children?”

Evelyn smiled bitterly.

“I spent decades correcting an injustice.”

Clara looked toward her mother.

“Did you kill Dad?”

Evelyn’s expression changed.

That was enough.

Clara whispered.

“You did.”

“He was weak.”

“You killed your brother.”

“He was going to destroy me.”

“He was going to expose you.”

“Same thing.”

Clara felt tears burn behind her eyes.

But she refused to give Evelyn the satisfaction.

“You’re finished.”

Evelyn laughed.

“You still don’t understand why you’re here.”

She removed a document.

“Sign.”

Clara looked at it.

A resignation from the Vance Trust.

“You think this matters now?”

“It matters to me.”

Clara took the pen.

Then she looked at Evelyn.

“No.”

Evelyn raised the gun.

Clara did not move.

“Sign it.”

“No.”

“Clara!”

“No.”

A gunshot exploded.

Clara flinched.

The bullet struck the wall beside her.

Outside, the tactical team heard it.

Daniel tried to leave the vehicle.

Nathan held him back.

Inside, Evelyn raised the gun again.

Then Clara’s mother suddenly kicked the chair backward.

It struck Evelyn’s legs.

The gun fired.

Clara lunged.

All three women crashed onto the floor.

The pistol slid beneath the table.

Evelyn reached for it.

Clara grabbed her ankle.

Evelyn kicked her face.

Clara refused to release her.

Then the front door exploded inward.

Officers flooded the house.

Evelyn reached the gun.

“Don’t move!”

She ignored them.

She raised it toward Clara.

And Daniel appeared in the doorway.

“Evelyn!”

She turned.

That second saved Clara’s life.

Officers tackled Evelyn before she could fire.

Daniel ran toward his sister.

Clara looked at their mother.

Alive.

Safe.

Then she looked at Evelyn screaming on the floor.

The woman who had terrorized their family for years was finally in handcuffs.

But the story was not finished.

Because while officers searched the lake house, they found something buried beneath the basement floor.

A metal box.

Inside were documents dating back twenty-seven years.

And one document proved the Vance family fortune did not legally belong to the Vances at all.
