CHAPTER 13 David Vale’s Last Letter

Marcus held the envelope but could not open it.
His name was written across the front in David Vale’s handwriting.
Not Khloe’s.
His.
Margaret stood beside the window.
Detective Brooks remained near the door.
Khloe lay unconscious between them.
Marcus looked at Margaret.
“You knew I was David’s son.”
“Yes.”
“All these years?”
“Yes.”
“And you watched me marry Khloe.”
“I knew you were not biologically related.”
“That is not the point.”
“No,” Margaret said. “The point is that David made me promise never to tell you unless Eleanor tried to destroy Khloe.”
“She nearly did.”
“I know.”
Marcus tore open the envelope.
Inside were four handwritten pages.
The first line made his hands shake.
Marcus,
If you are reading this, Eleanor has failed to keep you from the truth.
He continued.
Edmund Thorne believes you are his son because Eleanor allowed him to believe it.
You are mine.
I did not know until you were almost eight years old.
By then, Edmund had already built his identity around you.
Eleanor begged me to remain silent.
She said he would kill all of us if the truth emerged.
I believed her.
That silence became the greatest failure of my life.
Marcus lowered the letter.
“David knew.”
Margaret nodded.
He read on.
You may ask why I did not take you.
I tried.
Eleanor refused.
Then Edmund threatened Margaret and Khloe.
He did not know Khloe was Samuel’s child.
He believed she was mine.
That belief protected you both, because he feared scandal more than betrayal.
Marcus looked toward Khloe.
David had allowed Edmund to believe Khloe was his daughter.
He had allowed the world to believe Marcus and Khloe came from separate families with no connection beyond marriage.
The secret had protected them.
Until it had nearly killed them.
He continued reading.
The financial crimes matter.
But the greater danger is succession.
Edmund’s private trust transfers controlling power to his biological descendants.
You are not one of them.
If that truth is proven, the Thorne empire passes to a hidden beneficiary.
Khloe.
Marcus stopped.
“What?”
Margaret looked away.
“David created the beneficiary structure.”
Marcus read faster.
I arranged it through the Vale trust after discovering Edmund’s crimes.
If he died believing you were his son, the company would remain under your control.
If Eleanor exposed your birth, the controlling shares would pass to Khloe because Edmund used stolen Vale assets to build the original fund.
This was my insurance.
It was also the reason Eleanor could never allow you and Khloe to have a child.
Your child would unite both claims permanently.
Marcus stared at the letter.
That was why Eleanor had targeted the baby.
Not only because she hated Khloe.
Not only because of David.
The child represented legal control of both family fortunes.
A successor Eleanor could never manipulate.
Brooks read over his shoulder.
“This letter could reshape the entire motive.”
Marcus looked at her.
“It also means my mother knew everything.”
“Yes.”
The last paragraph was shorter.
Do not let blood decide what kind of man you are.
Edmund raised you.
I failed you.
Neither fact owns you.
Protect Khloe.
Not because she carries a name, a trust, or a claim.
Protect her because she will tell you the truth even when it costs her everything.
David
Marcus folded the letter.
For the first time that day, he cried.
Not loudly.
Not dramatically.
He simply lowered his head beside Khloe’s hand and let the grief come.
He had spent his life trying to become worthy of Edmund Thorne.
A man who was not his father.
A murderer.
Meanwhile, his real father had died protecting him from a distance.
Margaret moved toward the door.
Marcus looked up.
“Where is Eleanor?”
She stopped.
“I don’t know.”
“You came here because she contacted you.”
Margaret’s silence answered.
Brooks stepped forward.
“When?”
“This morning.”
“What did she say?”
“She told me to destroy the letter.”
“And you came here instead.”
“Yes.”
“Did she threaten you?”
“She said if I gave Marcus the truth, Khloe would never wake up.”
Marcus stood.
“What does that mean?”
Margaret looked at Khloe’s IV.
“I don’t know.”
Marcus followed her gaze.
Then he remembered Julian reaching toward Khloe’s line.
The syringe.
The nurse rendered unconscious.
“Get the doctor.”
The medical team rushed in.
Every medication was checked.
Every IV bag was removed.
The nurse read the serial numbers aloud.
One bag did not match hospital inventory.
The doctor stared at it.
“This was replaced.”
Marcus felt rage rise through him.
“With what?”
“We need toxicology.”
Brooks called the forensic team.
Within twenty minutes, the result came back.
The IV contained a sedative not prescribed to Khloe.
Not enough to kill her.
Enough to delay consciousness.
Enough to make doctors believe brain injury was worse than it was.
Marcus looked at Brooks.
“Someone wanted us to think she would never wake up.”
A security officer entered.
“We checked the camera outside this room.”
Brooks turned.
“And?”
“A woman entered at 5:12 this morning wearing nursing scrubs.”
“Face?”
“Partially covered.”
The officer showed them the footage.
The woman walked with perfect posture.
Silver hair hidden under a cap.
A red coat folded over one arm.
Margaret stared.
“That’s Eleanor.”
Marcus looked at her.
“She was here.”
Brooks ordered every exit sealed.
But Eleanor had already left.
Then a nurse spoke from beside the bed.
“Mr. Thorne.”
Marcus turned.
Khloe’s fingers had moved.
He rushed to her side.
“Khloe?”
Her eyelids trembled.
The doctor leaned closer.
“Khloe, can you hear me?”
Her eyes opened slowly.
Unfocused.
Then they found Marcus.
He bent over her.
“I’m here.”
Her lips moved.
He lowered his ear.
“What?”
Her voice was barely a breath.
“Baby?”
“Alive.”
A tear slipped from the corner of her eye.
“Our daughter is alive.”
Khloe closed her eyes briefly.
Then opened them again.
“Grace.”
Marcus smiled through tears.
“Grace.”
Khloe looked around.
Her mother stood nearby.
Detective Brooks.
Doctors.
No Samuel.
“Uncle Samuel?”
Marcus hesitated.
Khloe saw it.
“What happened?”
“He was shot.”
“Alive?”
“Yes.”
She exhaled.
Then Marcus took her hand.
“There are things you need to know.”
Khloe looked at him.
“No more pieces.”
“No more pieces.”
Before he could continue, Brooks’s phone rang.
She answered.
Her expression hardened.
“What location?”
Marcus stood.
“What happened?”
Brooks ended the call.
“Eleanor was found.”
“Where?”
“At the Thorne family estate.”
Marcus grabbed his coat.
Brooks raised a hand.
“There’s more.”
“What?”
“She has Isabella’s father, Lorenzo Rossi, with her.”
“Hostage?”
Brooks looked grim.
“No.”
May you like
“Then what?”
“They are burning documents.”
