CHAPTER 10 The Brother Who Came Back

Julian reached toward Khloe’s IV line.

She could not move her legs.

Could barely lift her arms.

But she could see.

And she could think.

The anesthetic had not yet fully taken effect.

The obstetrician stood frozen near the surgical table.

A nurse lay unconscious beside the curtain.

Julian held a syringe.

“Step away from her,” the obstetrician said.

Julian smiled.

“You have no idea what this family has already survived.”

“I said step away.”

He looked at the fetal monitor.

The baby’s heart rate continued falling.

“You should begin the delivery.”

The doctor stared at him.

“What did you inject into the nurse?”

“Enough to make her sleep.”

“If you touch my patient—”

“You will do nothing.”

He held up a small device.

A trigger.

“Because oxygen lines run through these walls, and fire travels very quickly in old hospitals.”

Khloe looked at the device.

A bomb threat.

Or a bluff.

Julian turned back to her.

“Your father should have burned the evidence.”

Khloe forced out a whisper.

“Why did you help kill him?”

Something changed in Julian’s eyes.

“I didn’t.”

“You destroyed the records.”

“Yes.”

“You helped them.”

“I helped myself.”

His honesty was colder than denial.

“Edmund owned me,” Julian said. “Debt is a chain, Khloe. Your father refused to understand that.”

“He trusted you.”

“I warned him.”

“You betrayed him.”

Julian’s jaw tightened.

“He was going to expose everyone. Samuel. The hospital. Our family.”

“Samuel wasn’t involved.”

“No?”

Julian leaned closer.

“You still believe him.”

Khloe’s pulse pounded.

“What did he do?”

Julian smiled.

“He chose which evidence survived.”

The operating room doors burst open.

Marcus entered wearing a surgical gown over his tuxedo.

Detective Brooks stood behind him with her weapon raised.

“Drop the syringe.”

Julian pressed the device in his hand.

“Come closer and this floor burns.”

Marcus stopped.

His eyes went to Khloe.

She was conscious.

Bleeding.

Terrified.

Alive.

“Khloe.”

Her lips moved.

“Baby.”

The obstetrician spoke urgently.

“We need to deliver now.”

Julian looked at the monitor.

“Then deliver.”

Brooks kept her weapon steady.

“Put down the trigger.”

“You think this is about escape?”

“What is it about?”

“Correction.”

Marcus stared at him.

“You attacked my wife.”

Julian shook his head.

“Isabella attacked your wife.”

“You helped her.”

“I gave her access.”

“Why?”

“Because Eleanor wanted the child gone.”

Marcus’s face twisted.

“My mother ordered this?”

“She paid for it.”

“And you agreed?”

Julian looked at Khloe.

“I needed her to open the safe.”

Khloe understood.

“You used Isabella.”

“Yes.”

“You let her attack me because you knew it would bring Samuel to the suite.”

“And Samuel would bring you to the blue room.”

Marcus took one careful step.

Julian raised the trigger.

“Stop.”

Marcus stopped.

Khloe looked at Julian.

“You could have taken the evidence yourself.”

“No.”

“Why?”

“David designed the safe to lock permanently if anyone entered the wrong code three times.”

“You needed me.”

“I needed your memory.”

“And now?”

“Now the ledgers belong to me.”

Brooks spoke calmly.

“They are already in police custody.”

Julian smiled.

“For the moment.”

Marcus looked toward the surgical team.

“My wife needs help.”

Julian’s eyes moved to Khloe’s abdomen.

“Then perhaps you should choose.”

“Choose what?”

“Your wife or the evidence.”

Marcus stared at him.

Julian held up his phone.

A live video showed Samuel in the waiting area.

A man stood behind him with a weapon.

Daniel Reeve.

Marcus’s face changed.

Daniel was not a victim.

He was part of it.

Julian continued.

“Samuel has the original ledger. The police have copies.”

Brooks looked at him.

“How do you know?”

“Because Daniel has been sending me updates for years.”

Marcus’s eyes burned.

“What do you want?”

“The ledger.”

“In exchange for what?”

“Samuel lives.”

Marcus glanced at Khloe.

“And my wife?”

“Her survival is no longer my concern.”

Marcus took another step.

Julian raised the trigger.

“I said stop.”

Khloe looked at Marcus.

He was trying to calculate.

Trying to control.

Trying to solve an impossible equation.

She knew that expression.

He wore it in boardrooms when companies were collapsing.

But this was not a boardroom.

Their child’s heartbeat was disappearing.

Khloe looked at the obstetrician.

“Do it.”

The doctor hesitated.

“Khloe—”

“Deliver the baby.”

Julian turned toward her.

“You really are David’s daughter.”

The doctor moved.

At the same moment, Khloe grabbed the IV stand and pushed it toward Julian.

The movement was weak.

But it startled him.

His hand shifted.

Detective Brooks fired.

The bullet struck Julian’s shoulder.

The trigger fell.

Marcus lunged and kicked it beneath the surgical cabinet.

Two officers rushed in.

Julian crashed against the wall.

The syringe shattered.

The obstetric team moved instantly.

“Prepare for emergency cesarean.”

Marcus reached Khloe’s side.

“I’m here.”

“Go to Samuel.”

“No.”

“Marcus.”

“I’m not leaving.”

“Daniel has him.”

Brooks picked up the trigger.

“It’s a transmitter.”

“Is there a bomb?” Marcus asked.

She examined the device.

“No activation light.”

Julian laughed through the pain.

“You think I came unprepared?”

The hospital lights flickered.

A distant alarm sounded.

Smoke detection.

Brooks called security.

“Evacuate the adjacent floor.”

Marcus looked at Khloe.

She gripped his hand.

“Go.”

His eyes filled.

“I can’t.”

“Yes, you can.”

“They are cutting you open.”

“And our baby needs one parent who stops the people doing this.”

The anesthesiologist adjusted the mask near her face.

Khloe looked at Marcus one last time.

“Bring me the truth.”

Then her eyes closed.

Marcus ran.

He reached the waiting area as Samuel struggled with Daniel near the evidence cart.

Daniel held a gun against Samuel’s ribs.

The original ledger was under his arm.

“Let him go,” Marcus said.

Daniel turned.

His face showed no guilt.

Only exhaustion.

“I told you I made mistakes.”

“You sold my family.”

“I protected your father’s legacy.”

“My father was a murderer.”

“He built everything you have.”

“With blood.”

Daniel tightened his grip on Samuel.

“You think wealth survives innocence?”

Marcus moved closer.

“You helped Isabella.”

“I monitored her.”

“You helped my mother.”

“I worked for your mother before I worked for you.”

The betrayal landed harder than Marcus expected.

“Why?”

“Because she knew you were weak where Khloe was concerned.”

Marcus almost smiled.

“My wife is the only reason I’m not weak.”

Daniel raised the gun.

“Give me the flash drive.”

“It’s already with the police.”

“Then this is over.”

He pointed the weapon at Samuel’s chest.

Marcus saw Samuel look down.

Not at the gun.

At Daniel’s injured leg.

Samuel suddenly drove his heel into Daniel’s knee.

Daniel staggered.

Marcus lunged.

The gun fired.

Samuel fell.

Marcus struck Daniel against the wall.

The ledger slid across the floor.

Brooks and two officers arrived.

“Drop it!”

Daniel raised the gun again.

Brooks fired.

Daniel collapsed.

Marcus turned toward Samuel.

Blood spread beneath his hospital coat.

“Stay with me.”

Samuel gripped Marcus’s wrist.

“The ledger.”

“It’s safe.”

“No.”

Samuel coughed.

“The final page.”

Marcus opened it.

Names.

Payments.

Dates.

At the bottom was a handwritten statement.

Signed by Samuel Vale.

Marcus stared.

“What is this?”

Samuel’s face filled with shame.

“I changed the autopsy report.”

Marcus looked at him.

“You helped them.”

“I helped hide how David died.”

“Why?”

“Because Eleanor threatened Khloe.”

Samuel’s breathing became shallow.

“She said the next body would be his daughter.”

Marcus stared at him.

“You lied for sixteen years.”

“Yes.”

“And Julian knew.”

“Yes.”

“Does Khloe know?”

“No.”

Samuel’s hand tightened around his wrist.

“You have to tell her.”

The operating room doors opened down the corridor.

A neonatal team rushed out carrying a tiny incubator.

Marcus froze.

Inside, beneath clear plastic and tubes, lay a baby smaller than anything he had ever seen.

A nurse ran beside the incubator.

Marcus stepped into the hallway.

“My child?”

The nurse looked at him.

“Your daughter.”

Marcus stopped breathing.

“Is she alive?”

“Yes.”

He looked toward the operating room.

“And my wife?”

The nurse’s expression changed.

Marcus felt the world disappear beneath him.

“What happened?”

The nurse lowered her voice.

“Mrs. Thorne is hemorrhaging.”

Marcus looked at the tiny baby being rushed away.

Then at the closed doors hiding Khloe.

Behind him, Samuel was bleeding.

Daniel lay motionless.

Julian was under arrest.

The evidence had finally survived.

But Marcus understood the cruelty of the truth.

They might win everything—

And still lose the only person worth saving.
