Chapter 13 - ARTHUR'S LAST LETTER

Kiora opened the letter inside the courthouse.
Her hands shook.
Kiora,
If Vanessa has this letter, then I failed to reach you before she did.
Kiora looked up.
Vanessa had possessed it for six years.
She continued.
There is something you must understand about Elias.
Kiora stopped.
She looked toward him.
Elias looked equally confused.
She continued reading.
He is not your uncle by blood.
That much you know.
What you do not know is that he once saved your life.
Kiora stared at Elias.
"When?"
He looked away.
"When you were four."
She remembered nothing.
Arthur's letter explained.
Kiora had been inside a vehicle during an attempted kidnapping.
Elias, then a young prosecutor investigating organized financial crime, intercepted the men.
He nearly died.
Arthur never forgot it.
That was how their friendship began.
Kiora continued.
If anything happens to me, trust Elias when your own judgment is clouded.
But do not let him decide your life for you.
You are stronger than either of us has allowed you to become.
Tears blurred the words.
Arthur knew.
He knew everyone had spent years protecting her by hiding things.
And he knew eventually she would have to stand alone.
The final paragraph was different.
One final truth.
Harrington Holdings does not belong to you because you are my daughter.
It belongs to you because for twelve years I watched you become the person I could trust with it.
Do not preserve my empire.
Improve it.
Kiora folded the letter.
Elias stood beside her.
"I'm sorry."
"For what?"
"Not telling you enough."
She looked at him.
"You kept me alive."
"I also kept you ignorant."
"Both can be true."
Elias nodded.
Kiora looked across the courtroom.
This place had started everything.
A handbag.
A shove.
A moment of arrogance.
Vanessa believed Kiora was weak.
Daniel believed she was controllable.
Richard believed everyone had a price.
They had all been wrong.
But the legal battle was only beginning.
Vanessa's attorneys immediately attacked the evidence.
Richard denied involvement.
Daniel offered cooperation in exchange for consideration.
The press discovered Kiora's identity.
By morning, cameras surrounded the courthouse.
HARRINGTON HEIRESS ATTACKED.
BILLION-DOLLAR TRUST AT CENTER OF FAMILY CONSPIRACY.
PREGNANT EXECUTIVE'S HUSBAND LINKED TO FRAUD.
Kiora became national news.
Then the Harrington Holdings board made its move.
They called an emergency meeting.
Six directors demanded Kiora surrender temporary control.
Their argument was simple.
She was emotionally compromised.
Pregnant.
Under public pressure.
Involved in an active criminal investigation.
Kiora listened without interrupting.
Then one director said the wrong thing.
"For your own protection, perhaps you should let experienced people handle this."
Kiora slowly looked at him.
"Experienced people?"
"Yes."
"Like my husband?"
Silence.
"Like Richard Harrow?"
More silence.
"Like the executives who didn't notice seventy-six million dollars disappearing?"
Nobody answered.
Kiora stood.
"My entire life, people have made decisions for me and called it protection."
She looked around the table.
"My father did it."
"Elias did it."
"My husband weaponized it."
"And now you're trying it."
She placed Arthur's letter on the table.
"That ends today."
One director frowned.
"Mrs. Bennett, you cannot simply—"
"My name is Kiora Harrington."
The room went silent.
It was the first time she had used her maiden name publicly since marrying Daniel.
"And effective immediately, I am exercising my voting authority."
The general counsel looked stunned.
"You can't."
Elias placed a document on the table.
"Actually, she can."
Kiora controlled fifty-one percent.
Daniel had never known.
Neither had Vanessa.
Neither had Richard.
Arthur had hidden the true structure even from them.
Kiora looked at the board.
"First order of business."
She removed six folders from her bag.
"You're fired."
Six directors stared at her.
Outside, reporters waited.
Inside, Kiora Harrington finally took control of the empire everyone had tried to steal from her.
Then her phone rang.
Hospital.
May you like
Her face changed.
Something was wrong with the baby.
