Chapter 1 - THE MAN ON THE MARBLE STAIRS

The courthouse went silent.

Not quiet.

Silent.

The kind of silence that came when hundreds of people realized they had just witnessed something they would never be able to pretend they hadn't seen.

Kiora Bennett stood frozen near the bottom of the marble staircase.

One hand covered the side where the leather handbag had struck her.

The other pressed protectively against her seven-month pregnant belly.

Her face had gone pale.

Her knees buckled.

Before she could hit the floor, a pair of strong hands caught her.

"Kiora."

The voice was low.

Controlled.

She knew it immediately.

Her eyes lifted.

"Uncle Elias?"

Elias Voss held her carefully against his chest.

At sixty-three, Elias didn't look like a man who frightened easily.

His silver hair was neatly combed back.

His charcoal suit was perfectly tailored.

A thin scar crossed the edge of his jaw.

Nothing about him appeared dramatic.

That was exactly what made people nervous.

He never needed to raise his voice.

Across from them, Vanessa Harrow lowered the black leather handbag she had just used.

Her smug expression flickered.

Only for a second.

Then it returned.

"Oh, please."

Vanessa rolled her eyes.

"I barely touched her."

Several people stared at her.

A court clerk looked horrified.

Two attorneys near the elevator had already pulled out their phones.

Vanessa noticed.

"Put those away."

Nobody moved.

Her voice sharpened.

"I said put them away."

Elias slowly looked at her.

Vanessa stopped speaking.

He didn't glare.

He didn't threaten her.

He simply studied her face as if memorizing it.

Then he looked toward the nearest security officer.

"Call medical assistance."

Vanessa scoffed.

"You're making this ridiculous."

Elias ignored her.

"Kiora, look at me."

Kiora struggled to breathe normally.

"My baby."

"I know."

"Something feels wrong."

For the first time, Elias's composure cracked.

Only slightly.

His jaw tightened.

"Where?"

"My side."

She swallowed.

"And I feel dizzy."

Elias turned toward the security desk.

"Now."

The officer grabbed his radio.

"Medical response to the west staircase."

Vanessa stepped backward.

"This is insane."

Elias finally faced her.

"No."

His voice remained calm.

"What you did was insane."

Vanessa gave a nervous laugh.

"You don't know what happened."

"I watched it happen."

Her smile disappeared.

Elias nodded toward the ceiling.

"And so did those cameras."

Vanessa looked up.

A security camera pointed directly toward the staircase.

Her face changed.

Kiora noticed.

It wasn't embarrassment.

It wasn't fear.

It was calculation.

Vanessa was already thinking about how to escape the consequences.

"You people are unbelievable."

She reached for her phone.

Elias's eyes dropped to it.

"Who are you calling?"

"My attorney."

"Good."

Elias almost smiled.

"You're going to need one."

Vanessa stared at him.

"You have no idea who you're talking to."

Elias gently helped Kiora sit on the bottom stair.

Then he removed his jacket and folded it behind her back.

Only after making sure she was supported did he stand.

He faced Vanessa again.

"I know exactly who you are."

Something in his voice made her hesitate.

"Vanessa Harrow."

Elias continued.

"Thirty-four years old."

Vanessa's eyes narrowed.

"Executive director of Harrow Development."

Her confidence returned.

"Then you know my family."

"I know your father."

That stopped her.

Vanessa stared at him.

Elias took one slow step forward.

"And I knew your grandfather."

Vanessa's face tightened.

"You knew my grandfather?"

"Very well."

"Who are you?"

Elias didn't answer.

Footsteps thundered through the corridor.

Two paramedics arrived carrying medical equipment.

Elias immediately turned away from Vanessa.

Kiora was examined beside the staircase.

Her pulse was elevated.

Her blood pressure had dropped.

One paramedic exchanged a look with the other.

"We need to take her in."

Kiora grabbed Elias's wrist.

"Don't leave me."

"I'm coming."

Vanessa stepped forward.

"This is absurd."

One of the courthouse officers blocked her.

"Ma'am, stay where you are."

Vanessa stared at him.

"Do you know who my father is?"

The officer looked unimpressed.

"No."

"You will."

Elias heard the exchange.

He said nothing.

The paramedics lifted Kiora onto a stretcher.

As they began rolling her toward the exit, Kiora whispered something.

"Elias."

He leaned closer.

"Yes?"

"This wasn't random."

His eyes sharpened.

"What do you mean?"

Kiora looked toward Vanessa.

"She knew why I was here."

Elias followed her gaze.

Vanessa was speaking furiously into her phone.

"What did she know?"

Kiora's fingers tightened around his hand.

"The hearing."

Elias froze.

Nobody outside their family was supposed to know about that hearing.

The records had been sealed.

"Who told her?"

Kiora's eyes filled with fear.

"I don't know."

Then she whispered something that changed everything.

"She said Daniel sent her."

Elias stopped walking.

Daniel Bennett.

Kiora's husband.

The father of her unborn child.

Elias slowly turned toward Vanessa.

She was staring directly at him.

And this time she wasn't smiling.

She mouthed two words.

Too late.

Then the elevator doors opened behind her.

A tall man in an expensive navy suit stepped out.

Kiora saw him.

Her entire body stiffened.

"No."

Elias turned.

Daniel Bennett walked into the courthouse corridor.

He looked at the stretcher.

Then at Vanessa.

Then at Elias.

He didn't look surprised.

That was the moment Elias understood.

May you like

Daniel already knew.

And whatever had happened on those courthouse stairs was only the beginning.
