“She Came Home From Vacation… But A Stranger Was Living In Her Apartment”
She returned to her apartment after the holiday, but a stranger opened the door.
The key slid easily into the lock.
But Elena never got the chance to turn it.
The door opened from the inside.
Standing in the doorway was a man she had never seen before.
He was wearing dark blue lounge pants and her oversized gray bathrobe — the exact one that usually hung on the hook in her bathroom. His hair was still damp, like he had just washed his face.
Behind him, Elena could see straight into her own apartment.
Her own hallway.
Except it no longer looked like hers.
A pair of unfamiliar men’s shoes rested on the mat.
A tiny pair of Velcro sneakers sat beside them.
Then, from one of the bedrooms, a child’s voice suddenly called out:
“Dad, where’s my tablet?”
Elena froze.
The man looked at her.
Then at her suitcase.
Then at the souvenir bag filled with magnets and the small tea box she had been holding since the taxi ride — the one that had cut her fingers because the corner was so sharp.
With the calm politeness of someone asking a completely ordinary question, he said:
“Who are you here to see?”
For a second, Elena couldn’t understand the words.
Her hand loosened.
The bag slipped from her fingers and hit the floor.
The tea box cracked against the tiles.
The magnets scattered across the hallway.
But she barely noticed.
After the overnight train.
The missed connection.
The taxi driver who looked like he could fall asleep at any moment.
The broken elevator.
All she wanted was a hot shower and silence.
Instead, there was a strange man standing in front of her door, wearing her robe, asking why she was there.
“This is my apartment,” Elena said quietly.
The voice that came out didn’t even sound like her own.
The man turned toward the hallway.
Then he called out:
“Olya, there’s a woman here saying this is her apartment.”
That was the moment Elena felt like someone had slammed a fist into her chest.
Because he wasn’t confused.
He hadn’t gone to the wrong floor.
He hadn’t opened the wrong door.
He was standing inside her home.
And he was calling for another woman.
A woman who apparently belonged there.
Elena grabbed her suitcase and pushed forward.
Hard.
The wheels slammed against the doorway as she forced her way inside.
The man stepped back instinctively.
And then she saw everything.
Her hallway had changed.
Someone else’s jacket was hanging above her chair.
A toy car with a missing wheel was lying beside the radiator.
An open bag of oranges sat on the shoe cabinet.
From the kitchen came the smell of fried onions and freshly cooked meat.
Fried onions.
Inside her home.
Her apartment.
Her kitchen.
Someone had been living here.
Someone had been cooking her food.
Someone had been drying clothes.
Someone had been walking around wearing her bathrobe.
