Chapter 1: The Paper That Changed Everything

Tamara stared at the white sheet of paper on the table.

For several seconds, she didn’t move.

The confidence she had walked in with was gone.

The expensive bracelet on her wrist suddenly felt heavier.

“What is this?” she asked.

Her voice was no longer demanding.

It was careful.

Vera looked at her calmly.

“The debt agreement.”

Tamara’s eyes moved quickly across the page.

Then her face changed.

“This… this is private.”

Vera leaned back.

“Private?”

She repeated the word quietly.

“Interesting. Because five minutes ago, you said it was my responsibility.”

Tamara looked away.

“It’s a family matter.”

Vera nodded.

“Yes. A family matter.”

She tapped the paper gently.

“But this document shows something important.”

Tamara remained silent.

Vera continued.

“Igor did not borrow money for our family.”

“He borrowed money for Larisa’s business.”

Tamara’s expression tightened.

“She is his friend.”

“A friend who received $80,000 from my husband,” Vera replied.

The kitchen became silent.

Tamara opened her mouth, but no words came out.

Vera had spent the last week investigating.

Not because she didn’t trust Igor.

Because she noticed something didn’t add up.

The missing money.

The strange phone calls.

The nervous behavior.

She discovered that Igor had secretly taken loans to help Larisa open a beauty salon.

But the salon failed.

And now someone wanted Vera to carry the consequences.

Tamara finally spoke.

“You are making this sound worse than it is.”

“No,” Vera answered.

“I am making it clear.”

Tamara leaned forward.

“You’re his wife. A good wife supports her husband.”

Vera looked at her.

“I support my husband.”

A pause.

“But supporting someone does not mean accepting responsibility for someone else’s choices.”

Tamara’s face hardened.

“You are being selfish.”

Vera smiled slightly.

“No.”

“I am being fair.”

At that moment, the front door opened.

Igor walked inside.

He stopped when he saw his mother sitting across from Vera.

And when he saw the paper on the table…

His face went pale.

“Vera…”

She looked at him.

“Tell me the truth, Igor.”

Her voice was calm.

“Did you borrow this money for Larisa?”

Igor lowered his eyes.

The silence was his answer.

Tamara immediately stood up.

“Don’t blame him! He was only trying to help someone!”

Vera looked between them.

And finally understood.

This was not just about debt.

This was about protecting Igor from the consequences of his own decisions.
