Chapter 14 - THE MAN WHO STOLE A DEAD MAN’S FACE

Mara drew her weapon.

“Hands where I can see them.”

The man everyone believed was Richard did not move.

Ethan stared.

“What is she talking about?”

Emily hid behind him.

“That isn’t Dad.”

The man smiled sadly.

“Emily has been medicated for years.”

Claire looked at him.

Wrong response.

Richard would have asked why his daughter feared him.

He would not have attacked her credibility.

Claire stepped away.

“Who are you?”

He sighed.

Then he removed a thin prosthetic piece near his jaw.

Ethan stared.

The resemblance remained.

But not enough.

Not anymore.

The man was Richard’s cousin.

Thomas Blackwood.

A man believed to have died overseas seventeen years earlier.

Julian laughed from the police vehicle.

Even handcuffed, he looked delighted.

“You finally figured it out.”

Ethan lunged toward Thomas.

Mara stopped him.

“Who are you?”

Thomas answered.

“The man Richard trusted most.”

Claire’s expression hardened.

“Where is Richard?”

Thomas looked toward Julian.

“Dead.”

Ethan stopped.

Thomas continued.

“Richard survived the lake.”

“He survived St. Agnes.”

“He survived Julian’s private prison.”

“He escaped.”

Claire’s throat tightened.

“Then what happened?”

“He came to me.”

“Fourteen months ago.”

Nathan’s story had been true.

Partly.

Thomas continued.

“Richard wanted to expose everyone.”

“Julian.”

“Harold.”

“Eleanor.”

“Me.”

Ethan stared.

“You?”

Thomas nodded.

“I helped Julian create the offshore system.”

“You were the missing architect.”

“Yes.”

“Why pretend to be Richard?”

“Because when Richard found me, he made one mistake.”

“What?”

“He came alone.”

Ethan’s face went white.

Thomas did not need to say more.

Mara stepped closer.

“Where is Richard’s body?”

Thomas smiled faintly.

“Ask Julian.”

Julian shouted from across the tarmac.

“Liar!”

Thomas laughed.

“You see?”

“Even now.”

“Nobody trusts anybody.”

Claire understood the final trick.

“That was the plan.”

Thomas looked at her.

“Excuse me?”

“You and Julian.”

“You built a conspiracy where every person had enough guilt to fear the truth.”

“Eleanor hid Richard.”

“Harold hid the affair.”

“Julian hid the money.”

“You hid the system.”

“And everyone kept everyone else quiet.”

Thomas’s smile vanished.

Claire continued.

“Then Richard escaped.”

“You killed him.”

“You took his identity because Julian needed Richard alive on paper.”

“For signatures.”

“Corporate access.”

“The trust.”

Thomas stared at her.

Ethan looked sick.

“You hugged me.”

Thomas glanced at him.

“I needed you convinced.”

Claire stepped toward him.

“And the handwriting?”

“Richard’s old documents.”

“Voice recordings?”

“Artificial reconstruction.”

“The scar?”

“Makeup.”

Ethan’s hands curled into fists.

Mara turned to officers.

“Take him.”

Thomas smiled.

“You’re still missing something.”

Claire stopped.

“What?”

“Richard knew.”

“Knew what?”

“That he wouldn’t survive.”

Thomas looked at Ethan.

“So he left one final recording.”

“Where?”

Thomas glanced toward Emily.

“She has it.”

Emily froze.

Everyone turned.

“I don’t.”

Thomas smiled.

“Yes.”

“You do.”

“The necklace.”

Emily touched the small silver pendant around her neck.

Her eyes widened.

Claire approached slowly.

“Can I see it?”

Emily nodded.

Inside the pendant was a memory card.

They played it inside the airfield office.

Richard appeared on screen.

The real Richard.

Older.

Thin.

But unmistakable.

Ethan sat inches from the monitor.

Richard looked directly into the camera.

“Ethan.”

“If Emily gives you this, then I did not make it.”

Ethan covered his mouth.

“I need you to hear something before anything else.”

“None of this happened because of you.”

“You were lied to before you were old enough to understand what a lie was.”

“Harold may be your biological father.”

“But I chose to be yours.”

“I never regretted it.”

Ethan cried silently.

Claire held his hand.

Richard continued.

“I failed Claire.”

“I failed Emily.”

“And I failed you when I let fear become the foundation of this family.”

“Do better than I did.”

“Tell the truth even when it costs you.”

Then Richard looked toward someone off camera.

“Claire.”

“If Ethan is watching this with you…”

Ethan glanced at her.

Richard smiled faintly.

“He finally learned something.”

Claire laughed through tears.

“Please don’t forgive him because I asked.”

“Make him earn it.”

Ethan almost laughed.

Then Richard’s expression became serious.

“There is one final account.”

“It contains the money Julian, Thomas, Harold, and Eleanor moved.”

“I recovered most of it before they found me.”

“The access phrase is not a number.”

“It is the one thing Eleanor never understood.”

The video ended.

Ethan stared at the blank screen.

“What does that mean?”

Emily whispered.

“I know.”

Everyone turned.

“Dad used to say it.”

“When Mom told him family meant loyalty.”

“He always answered…”

Emily’s eyes filled.

“Family without truth is just a prison.”

Claire tried the phrase.

Access granted.

The screen revealed hundreds of millions of dollars.

Not stolen anymore.

Recovered.

Held in escrow for the Blackwood Foundation.

And beneath the account was a scheduled transfer.

Effective upon verification of Richard’s death.

All funds were to be returned to charitable programs.

Not Ethan.

Not Eleanor.

Not Claire.

Richard had spent his final months fixing what he could.

Mara arrested Thomas.

Julian was charged.

Harold was charged.

Eleanor faced charges too.

But before police took her away from Blackwood Manor the next morning, she asked for five minutes with Claire.

Claire agreed.

Eleanor stood in the ballroom.

The same staircase behind them.

“I pushed you.”

Claire said nothing.

“I told myself I was stopping you from finding Emily.”

“I told myself Julian would hurt everyone.”

“I told myself a hundred things.”

Claire stared at her.

“You still pushed me.”

“Yes.”

“You framed me.”

“Yes.”

“You let Ethan hate me for three years.”

Eleanor’s eyes filled.

“Yes.”

Claire’s voice remained calm.

“I don’t forgive you.”

Eleanor nodded.

“I know.”

“But I hope you finally stop calling cruelty protection.”

Eleanor looked toward the staircase.

“I think I already have.”

Police led her away.

Claire watched the front doors close.

Ethan stood behind her.

He did not touch her.

Not without asking.

“Claire.”

She turned.

“I know Richard told you to make me earn it.”

“He did.”

“I intend to.”

Claire studied him.

“This isn’t a movie.”

“I know.”

“One apology doesn’t fix three years.”

“I know.”

“I may never come back to you.”

Ethan swallowed.

“I know.”

Claire nodded.

For the first time, he had finally answered correctly.

Then Mara entered the ballroom.

Her expression was serious.

“Claire.”

“What?”

“We recovered Richard’s remains.”

Ethan closed his eyes.

Claire squeezed his hand.

Mara continued.

“But that isn’t why I’m here.”

She held out a sealed evidence bag.

Inside was a photograph.

Richard.

Taken only four months earlier.

He stood beside another woman.

Claire stared at her face.

She knew her.

Ethan noticed Claire’s expression.

“Who is she?”

Claire whispered.

“My mother.”

May you like

Ethan stared.

Claire’s mother had supposedly died six years ago.
