Chapter 4 - THE FAMILY SECRET EVERYONE PROTECTED

I drove to Burlington without telling Callum.

I needed answers.

Not apologies.

Not excuses.

Answers.

Bridget sat across from me at a small coffee shop.

She placed a thick file on the table.

"Emma, I need you to understand something."

"What?"

"Your family didn't accidentally create this situation."

The word family almost made me laugh.

Because after Thanksgiving, that word felt different.

"What are you saying?"

She opened the file.

"Your mother-in-law and Deline have been restructuring obligations for years."

"Using my name?"

"In some cases."

I stared at the pages.

"My husband knew."

Bridget didn't answer.

She didn't need to.

I felt something break inside me.

Not my heart.

Something colder.

The last piece of trust.

I went home that evening.

Callum was waiting.

"I know where you went."

I placed my keys on the counter.

"Good."

"We need to talk."

"We should have talked years ago."

He looked exhausted.

"I was trying to keep everyone together."

"No."

I looked at him.

"You were trying to keep everyone comfortable."

He swallowed.

"Do you think I wanted this?"

"I think you wanted the consequences to belong to someone else."

His eyes filled.

"I love you."

"Then why did you let me stand alone?"

That question destroyed him.

Because there was no answer.

The next day, Deline called.

I almost didn't answer.

But I did.

"Emma."

Her voice was sweet.

Too sweet.

"I heard you're upset."

"Yes."

"I think you're misunderstanding things."

"No."

I looked at the documents.

"I understand perfectly."

She became colder.

"You need to be careful."

"Is that a threat?"

"No."

A pause.

"Advice."

I smiled.

"Your advice is exactly what got us here."

Then she said something I never expected.

"You should ask your husband why he never told you about the first loan."

My entire body went still.

"The first loan?"

Silence.

Then she hung up.

I turned around.

Callum was standing in the doorway.

He had heard.

"Callum."

He looked terrified.

"Emma..."

"What first loan?"

May you like

And for the first time in nine years...

My husband looked like a man who knew the truth had finally caught him.
