Chapter 14 - THE APOLOGY MY DAUGHTER DESERVED

The first person Deline apologized to was Renley.
I stood nearby.
Not to protect my daughter from the apology.
To protect her from another disappointment.
Deline knelt down.
"Renley."
My daughter held Baxter.
"Yes?"
"I owe you an apology."
Renley looked confused.
"For what?"
Deline took a breath.
"For hurting you."
The room was quiet.
"I was wrong."
Renley looked at me.
Then back at Deline.
"Why did you do it?"
That question hurt.
Because children ask the questions adults avoid.
Deline wiped her eyes.
"Because I thought being powerful meant never being wrong."
Renley looked at Baxter.
"That's not being powerful."
Deline nodded.
"You're right."
Then my daughter said something I will never forget.
"Did you know Daddy was sad too?"
Deline looked surprised.
"Yes."
"Because he didn't help me."
The words hit everyone.
Deline looked at Callum.
And he looked away.
Because he deserved to hear it.
Not as punishment.
As truth.
That night, Callum and I talked.
Really talked.
For the first time in months.
"I know I hurt you."
"Yes."
"I know sorry isn't enough."
"No."
He nodded.
"But I want to spend the rest of my life proving I can be different."
I looked at him.
"I don't need a perfect husband."
"What do you need?"
"One who stands beside me when it matters."
He nodded.
"I can do that."
The question was whether he actually would.
Not whether he promised.
Promises were easy.
Actions were harder.
Months passed.
Slowly.
Carefully.
Callum went to therapy.
He rebuilt trust with Renley.
He stopped avoiding conflict.
He stopped saying:
"That's just how my family is."
Because he finally understood.
People don't change because they are forced.
They change when they finally see the damage they caused.
Then, one evening, Bridget called.
"Emma."
I smiled.
"What happened?"
"I have news."
"Good or bad?"
"Good."
She paused.
"The financial case is closing."
I relaxed.
"And?"
"The house is safe."
I smiled.
For the first time in a long time...
I felt like I could breathe.
Then Bridget added:
"But there's one thing."
My smile disappeared.
"What?"
"The person who exposed the final evidence..."
May you like
She hesitated.
"It was Callum."
