Chapter 13 - THE TRAP

“FEDERAL AGENTS!”

Harrison raised one hand.

The other held the baby against his chest.

“Attorney Harrison Cole.”

“Child in my arms.”

“Do not fire.”

Agents flooded the mansion.

Richard began shouting.

“He kidnapped me!”

Elias stepped backward.

“Hands!”

Agents surrounded him.

Harrison watched Richard transform.

Seconds earlier, he had been terrified.

Now he looked like a victim.

“My wife’s brother arranged this.”

Richard pointed toward Harrison.

“He has been threatening me since the accident.”

Harrison almost admired the speed.

Almost.

Rachel Monroe entered behind the tactical team.

She saw Harrison.

Then the baby.

Then Richard.

“What happened?”

Richard answered first.

“Arrest him.”

Rachel ignored him.

“Harrison?”

“Baby recovered safely.”

“Elias Ward?”

“Present.”

“Richard?”

Harrison looked at him.

“Lying.”

Richard laughed.

“You have no authority here.”

Rachel turned.

“Actually, I do.”

She removed a document.

“Richard Harrington, you are under arrest for conspiracy to commit wire fraud, securities fraud, obstruction of justice, witness tampering, and multiple related federal offenses.”

Richard’s smile disappeared.

Agents moved toward him.

Then another man entered.

Dark suit.

Federal badge.

Deputy Director Calvin Ross.

“Stop.”

Rachel turned.

“Sir?”

“Release Mr. Harrington.”

Silence.

Harrison immediately understood.

The leak.

The person inside government.

Calvin Ross.

Rachel stared at him.

“On whose authority?”

“Mine.”

“We have an indictment.”

“Sealed indictment.”

“Not anymore.”

Ross looked at the agents.

“Untie him.”

Nobody moved.

Ross raised his voice.

“That is an order.”

Harrison looked at Rachel.

She looked furious.

But uncertain.

Richard smiled.

There it was.

The confidence.

The invisible protection.

Ross approached Harrison.

“Give me the child.”

“No.”

“This is now federal custody.”

“No.”

Ross’s eyes hardened.

“You are interfering with an investigation.”

Harrison smiled faintly.

“Which investigation?”

Ross hesitated.

Tiny mistake.

Harrison saw it.

“The one you haven’t identified?”

Ross said nothing.

Harrison continued.

“Or the one Richard Harrington warned you about before we arrived?”

Richard’s face changed.

Ross looked toward him.

Another mistake.

Harrison caught that too.

“You know each other.”

Ross stepped closer.

“Mr. Cole.”

“You leaked Khloe’s meeting.”

Silence.

“You told Richard she was cooperating.”

Ross’s jaw tightened.

“You have no evidence.”

Harrison looked at Elias.

Elias smiled.

“I do.”

Everyone turned.

Elias nodded toward the desk.

“Second drawer.”

An agent opened it.

Inside was a recorder.

Elias had recorded everything in the mansion.

Including Richard’s conversation before Harrison arrived.

Including Richard calling Calvin Ross.

Rachel took the recorder.

Ross moved toward her.

“Give me that.”

She stepped back.

“Sir.”

“Now.”

Harrison watched Ross lose control.

That was all he needed.

Rachel handed the device to another agent.

“Secure it.”

Ross reached for it.

Two agents blocked him.

The room shifted.

Authority disappeared.

Truth took its place.

Richard looked toward the door.

Harrison saw him calculate.

Then run.

Richard shoved an agent aside.

He sprinted through the side corridor.

“Richard!”

Agents followed.

Harrison handed the baby to Rachel.

“Take her.”

Then he followed.

Richard reached the rear terrace.

Beyond it stood a steep hill leading toward the river.

Rain had begun.

“Stop!”

Richard turned.

Harrison approached slowly.

Agents were still seconds away.

Richard laughed breathlessly.

“You always thought you were better than me.”

“No.”

Harrison kept moving.

“I thought Khloe deserved better than you.”

Richard’s face twisted.

“She was supposed to be grateful.”

“For what?”

“Everything.”

“The house.”

“The money.”

“The name.”

Harrison stared at him.

“She loved you.”

Richard laughed.

“That was her mistake.”

Something inside Harrison wanted violence.

Something older and darker.

But he remembered Khloe.

He remembered his mother.

Truth.

Not fists.

Evidence.

Patience.

Precision.

Harrison stopped.

“Say it again.”

Richard frowned.

“What?”

“That loving you was her mistake.”

Richard smiled.

“You recording me?”

Harrison said nothing.

Richard looked at his jacket.

Then laughed.

“You are.”

Harrison smiled faintly.

Richard’s smile disappeared.

“Good.”

Harrison stepped closer.

“Tell the jury exactly who you are.”

Richard’s face hardened.

“You think a jury will ever hear this?”

“Yes.”

“You think Ross is the only person I own?”

Harrison paused.

Richard smiled.

“There are judges.”

“Prosecutors.”

“Police commissioners.”

“Senators.”

“You arrest me tonight, someone releases me tomorrow.”

Harrison’s eyes narrowed.

Richard continued.

“My father built something you cannot destroy.”

Then another voice came from behind Harrison.

“Your father said the same thing.”

Richard froze.

Elias Ward stood beneath the terrace light.

Richard’s face went white.

Elias held a cassette player.

He pressed play.

Charles Harrington’s voice filled the rainy night.

“Margaret Cole is becoming a problem.”

Another voice asked.

“What do you want done?”

Charles answered.

“Make sure she never reaches the prosecutor.”

Harrison closed his eyes.

His mother’s murder.

Finally.

Proof.

Richard stared at the recorder.

Then he made his final mistake.

He lunged for it.

His foot slipped on the wet stone.

Harrison reached instinctively.

He caught Richard’s wrist.

Richard hung over the terrace edge.

Below them, the river churned.

Richard looked up.

For the first time, genuine terror filled his face.

“Harrison.”

Harrison held him.

The man who had betrayed Khloe.

Framed her.

Threatened her.

Endangered her child.

Richard whispered.

“Don’t let me fall.”

Harrison stared at him.

Then tightened his grip.

“I’m not you.”

Agents rushed forward.

They pulled Richard back onto the terrace.

Handcuffs closed around his wrists.

Harrison watched him being taken away.

But the victory lasted less than a minute.

Rachel approached.

“Harrison.”

He turned.

Her face was pale.

“What?”

“It’s Khloe.”

His heart stopped.

May you like

“What happened?”

“She disappeared from the hospital.”
