Chapter 11 - THE DEAD MAN’S HANDWRITING

Thomas Cole had been dead for nine years.

Yet the note looked exactly like his handwriting.

Harrison refused to believe in coincidences.

He brought the note to a forensic examiner.

Three hours later, the result came back.

“Strong probability.”

Harrison stared at the report.

“That it was written by my father?”

“No.”

The examiner pointed to microscopic inconsistencies.

“That the writer copied your father’s handwriting.”

Harrison’s eyes narrowed.

“From what?”

“We’d need samples.”

Harrison immediately remembered something.

His father’s journals.

After Thomas died, Khloe had inherited the family house.

Boxes of journals remained in the attic.

Someone with access could copy his writing.

Harrison called Khloe.

“Who has keys to the old house?”

“You.”

“Me.”

“Richard.”

Silence.

Richard had lived there briefly while renovations were being completed on their estate.

Harrison drove there with Mercer.

The attic had been searched.

Boxes were open.

Journals missing.

But one remained.

Thomas Cole.

Harrison opened it.

Most pages contained ordinary things.

Bills.

Appointments.

Notes about Khloe’s school.

Then he reached October.

Three pages had been removed.

The week their mother died.

Mercer noticed an indentation on the next page.

“Someone wrote on top of the missing sheet.”

They photographed it under angled light.

Words slowly emerged.

CHARLES CALLED AGAIN.

HE KNOWS MARGARET HAS THE LEDGER.

HE SAID IF SHE TALKS, THE CHILDREN PAY.

Harrison stopped reading.

Mercer continued.

MARGARET REFUSES TO RUN.

SHE SAYS THE TRUTH HAS TO MATTER.

I’M SCARED.

Then the final line.

IF ANYTHING HAPPENS TO HER, LOOK AT HARRINGTON.

Harrison closed his eyes.

His father had known.

But he hadn’t participated.

He had been terrified.

Just like Khloe.

The pattern repeated across generations.

Charles threatened Thomas.

Richard threatened Khloe.

A Harrington man used fear to control a Cole spouse.

Harrison’s phone rang.

Rachel Monroe.

“We recovered the Penn Station locker.”

“The folder?”

“Yes.”

“The recording?”

“Yes.”

“And?”

“You need to hear it.”

The recording was Richard and Martin.

Richard’s voice was unmistakable.

“If Khloe reaches federal prosecutors, Bellweather dies.”

Martin answered.

“And if Vanessa refuses?”

“She won’t.”

“You can’t know that.”

“I know Vanessa.”

“She’s pregnant.”

“That makes her easier to control.”

Harrison’s jaw tightened.

Martin continued.

“What if Khloe survives?”

Richard laughed.

“Then the baby solves the problem.”

“How?”

“Once DNA confirms what she is, Khloe loses everything.”

“Richard…”

“My father’s trust cannot recognize that child.”

“You’re talking about your sister.”

A long pause.

Then Richard answered.

“I’m talking about half my company.”

Harrison’s face became stone.

The recording continued.

Martin whispered.

“You manipulated the clinic.”

“My father created the problem.”

“I’m correcting it.”

“What if Khloe finds out?”

“She already has.”

Silence.

Then Richard said something Harrison didn’t expect.

“That’s why she has to look guilty.”

The recording ended.

Rachel looked at Harrison.

“We can indict him.”

“Do it.”

“We need to locate him.”

Harrison frowned.

“He’s not at Harrington Tower?”

“No.”

“Home?”

“No.”

“Private aircraft?”

“All grounded.”

Harrison’s phone vibrated.

A text.

From Richard.

A photograph.

Khloe’s baby.

Alive.

Wrapped in a white blanket.

Harrison’s entire body became still.

Then another message.

COME ALONE.

Then an address.

Harrison recognized it.

The old Harrington estate.

Charles Harrington’s abandoned mansion.

Rachel looked at him.

“You’re not going alone.”

Harrison put the phone away.

“Yes.”

“No.”

“He has my niece.”

“That is exactly why you’re not going alone.”

Harrison looked at her.

“I didn’t say you couldn’t follow me.”

Rachel understood.

Twenty minutes later, Harrison drove toward the estate.

He thought he was going to meet Richard.

He was wrong.

Because when the mansion doors opened—

Richard was already on his knees.

His hands were tied.

His face was bruised.

May you like

And standing behind him holding Khloe’s baby—

Was Elias Ward.
