Chapter 4 — A Birthday Worth Remembering

Rain began falling just as the police escorted Julián and Ofelia toward the waiting patrol cars.

Neither of them spoke.

Neither looked back.

News reporters had already gathered outside, their cameras flashing as neighbors watched from their porches.

The headlines the next morning would not be about a birthday party.

They would be about the celebrated prosecutor who had exposed an abuser without raising his voice.

But Ernesto wasn't watching the cameras.

He was watching his daughter.

Valeria stood beneath the front porch, staring at the handprint-shaped bruise reflected in the glass of the front door.

Slowly, she reached into her purse.

She removed the expensive makeup compact that had hidden her injuries for months.

Without a word, she dropped it into the trash.

She would never hide another bruise.

Never invent another excuse.

Never apologize for someone else's violence again.

Ernesto walked beside her.

"I couldn't save your mother," he said quietly, his voice breaking for the first time in decades.

"I promised myself I'd never arrive too late again."

Valeria wrapped her arms around him.

This time, she didn't cry from fear.

She cried because she was finally safe.

Several weeks later, the courtroom was packed.

Julián was convicted on multiple counts of domestic abuse, coercive control, forgery, fraud, and destruction of evidence.

Ofelia received her own sentence for conspiracy, evidence tampering, and financial crimes.

When the verdict was read, Valeria didn't look at either of them.

She looked at the courtroom doors where her father stood waiting.

For the first time in nearly a year...

She walked out of the courthouse with her head held high.

Her birthday had begun as a carefully planned humiliation.

It ended as the day she reclaimed her life.

And the greatest gift she received was not justice.

It was never having to be afraid again.
