Chapter 2 — The Garbage Bag Nobody Was Supposed to Find

No one moved.

The investigators entered the dining room with quiet precision, each step deliberate enough to drain the remaining confidence from Julián's face.

The mariachi musicians quietly gathered their instruments and slipped out through the patio doors.

Only the birthday candles continued to burn.

One investigator displayed his badge.

"Mr. Julián Ortega?"

Julián forced a laugh.

"This is ridiculous. You can't just walk into a private family celebration."

"We have a judicial search warrant."

The investigator handed him several pages.

"We're investigating allegations of domestic violence, financial fraud, forgery, and unlawful coercive control."

The smile disappeared from Julián's face.

Ofelia abruptly stood up, clutching the black garbage bag against her chest.

"You have no right to touch our personal belongings."

Ernesto finally spoke.

"Actually..."

"They're my belongings."

Everyone turned toward him.

He pointed calmly at the garbage bag.

"The house belongs to my daughter."

"The documents inside that bag belong to me."

"The forged signature belongs to a felony."

A forensic investigator stepped forward.

"Ma'am, please place the bag on the table."

Ofelia hesitated.

Then, in one desperate movement, she ripped the bag open.

Hundreds of shredded papers spilled across the marble floor.

"I destroyed everything!" she shouted.

"You have nothing!"

But the forensic investigator simply smiled.

"We were hoping you'd do that."

He photographed every torn document before carefully collecting each piece into evidence bags.

"We've already recovered the original electronic files."

"We only needed to establish that someone intentionally destroyed evidence."

The room became painfully silent.

One of Julián's drinking buddies quietly slipped out the front door.

Then another.

Within seconds...

Half the guests had disappeared.

Only the people who mattered remained.

Ernesto looked at Julián.

"You spent months convincing my daughter she had no proof."

May you like

He paused.

"You forgot that abusers almost always create evidence."
