Chapter 14 - Catherine’s Secret

They watched the file together.
Emily.
Nathaniel.
Daniel.
Sophie slept on the sofa nearby.
It was nearly noon.
Nobody had the energy to go home.
Arthur appeared on screen.
He looked sick.
But lucid.
“Emily.”
“Nathaniel.”
“If both of you are seeing this, then I failed to tell you myself.”
Emily felt Nathaniel take her hand.
Arthur continued.
“Catherine knew about Nathaniel.”
“She also knew something I did not.”
Emily leaned forward.
“Before she died, she changed Meridian.”
Daniel frowned.
Arthur looked down.
“She created a third protection.”
“Not for money.”
“For family.”
A document appeared.
Emily read.
Meridian could never be inherited by a spouse.
Never transferred through marriage.
Never seized through divorce.
Never controlled through incapacity.
Only direct descendants of Arthur or Thomas could activate it.
Emily closed her eyes.
Preston’s entire plan had been impossible from the beginning.
Even if he had succeeded.
Even if he had taken control of Emily.
Even if he had forged everything.
Meridian would never have belonged to him.
Arthur continued.
“I discovered Catherine’s amendment only recently.”
“And when I did, I realized something terrible.”
“Preston didn’t know.”
“But Margaret did.”
Emily stared.
Margaret had known Preston could never inherit Meridian.
Yet she had encouraged him anyway.
Why?
Arthur answered.
“She was using her own son.”
Preston had been a tool.
The marriage.
The fraud.
The humiliation.
Everything.
Margaret needed Emily destabilized enough to expose the system.
She had sacrificed her own son for revenge.
Nathaniel whispered,
“She destroyed him.”
Emily shook her head.
“She helped.”
“He made his own choices.”
Arthur continued.
“There is one final matter.”
Emily braced herself.
“I owe both of you an apology.”
“To Nathaniel, for allowing shame and fear to keep me away.”
“To Emily, for believing silence could protect you.”
“It cannot.”
“Secrets do not protect families.”
“They poison them.”
Emily began crying quietly.
Arthur smiled weakly.
“So no more secrets.”
“Meridian belongs to both of you.”
“Together.”
“And if Emily’s child is born safely, that child becomes the next Harrington successor.”
Emily touched her belly.
Arthur leaned closer to the camera.
“Emily.”
“If Preston hurt you before you saw this, I am sorry I did not act sooner.”
She covered her mouth.
“I saw warning signs.”
“I told myself you would come to me when you were ready.”
“I should have come to you.”
Emily finally broke.
Nathaniel wrapped an arm around her.
On screen, Arthur’s eyes filled with tears.
“You were never weak.”
“You were loyal.”
“Unfortunately, cruel people often mistake loyalty for permission.”
Arthur paused.
“Do not spend your life proving Preston wrong.”
“Build something he could never understand.”
“A peaceful life.”
The video ended.
Nobody spoke for a long time.
Three weeks later, federal prosecutors announced indictments.
Margaret Vale faced conspiracy, fraud, kidnapping, witness tampering, and charges related to Arthur’s medical treatment.
Gregory Lawson faced additional weapons and kidnapping charges.
Charles Whitmore agreed to cooperate.
Vanessa Caldwell received a reduced sentence recommendation after providing evidence and helping Sophie escape.
Preston faced fraud, conspiracy, kidnapping, coercion, unlawful surveillance, and multiple financial charges.
Emily filed for divorce.
He contested it.
For exactly six days.
Then Daniel released the ballroom security footage.
The world saw everything.
Emily kneeling.
Eight months pregnant.
Vanessa standing over her.
Preston smiling.
“Maybe now my wife will finally learn some respect.”
The video spread everywhere.
Board members resigned.
Executives issued apologies.
Guests claimed they had been “too shocked” to intervene.
Emily ignored all of them.
She remembered who had stood silent.
Silence was also a choice.
Six weeks after the ballroom gala, Emily entered Harrington Global headquarters.
People stood as she passed.
She stopped.
“Sit down.”
Everyone immediately obeyed.
Nathaniel walked beside her.
He had accepted a seat on the Meridian trust board.
Nothing more.
“I already have a job,” he told her.
“What job?”
“Being Sophie’s father.”
Emily liked that answer.
They reached the boardroom.
One chair remained empty.
Preston’s.
Emily looked at it.
Then told maintenance to remove it.
Not replace it.
Remove it.
Some absences deserved to remain visible.
That afternoon, Emily was halfway through a meeting when she felt something warm.
She froze.
Nathaniel looked at her.
“What?”
Emily stared down.
“My water just broke.”
Every executive panicked.
Emily laughed for the first time in months.
Nathaniel grabbed his keys.
“Hospital.”
“Now.”
As they reached the elevator, Emily’s phone vibrated.
A message from Daniel.
URGENT.
NEW EVIDENCE FROM PRESTON’S PERSONAL SAFE.
Emily stared at it.
Nathaniel groaned.
“No.”
“Absolutely not.”
“You are having a baby.”
Emily almost ignored the message.
Then Daniel sent a photograph.
Emily stopped.
It showed an envelope.
Written across the front were the words:
FOR EMILY.
FROM PRESTON.
TO BE OPENED ONLY IF ARTHUR HARRINGTON IS DEAD.
Emily stared at the date.
Preston had written it eleven months earlier.
Before Arthur became seriously ill.
Before the forged trust documents.
Before the medication changes.
Emily looked at Nathaniel.
“He knew.”
Nathaniel stared at the envelope.
“Knew what?”
Emily felt another contraction.
May you like
She looked toward the elevator.
“I think Preston knew Dad was going to die before any of this started.”
