Chapter 1 - The Men Outside the Ballroom

For several seconds, Preston did not move.

Neither did anyone else.

The ballroom had been loud only moments earlier.

Champagne glasses had clinked.

A string quartet had played near the staircase.

Executives had laughed at Preston’s jokes.

Women in diamonds had whispered behind jeweled hands while Emily knelt on the marble floor.

Now there was nothing.

Only silence.

Emily stood with one hand beneath her eight-month belly.

Her knees burned from the marble.

Her back ached.

Her fingers were still wrapped around the white cloth Preston had ordered her to use on Vanessa Caldwell’s shoes.

Vanessa was standing directly in front of her.

The beautiful brunette had been smiling seconds earlier.

That smile was gone.

Preston recovered first.

“What did you just say?”

Emily looked at him.

“My father left everything to me.”

Preston gave a short laugh.

It sounded confident.

But Emily knew him well enough to hear the fear underneath it.

“Your father was sick for months.”

“He barely knew what day it was.”

Emily’s expression did not change.

“He knew exactly what he was doing.”

Vanessa folded her arms.

“This is ridiculous.”

Emily looked down at Vanessa’s polished silver heels.

Then she looked at the cloth in her hand.

Slowly, deliberately, Emily dropped it.

It landed at Vanessa’s feet.

A few guests inhaled sharply.

Preston’s face darkened.

“Pick that up.”

Emily stared at him.

“No.”

The word was quiet.

But it traveled across the ballroom.

Preston took one step toward her.

“Emily.”

“You’re embarrassing yourself.”

She almost laughed.

For months, that sentence had controlled her.

You’re embarrassing yourself.

Whenever she questioned a bank statement.

Whenever she asked why Preston spent nights away from home.

Whenever Vanessa attended a company dinner that supposedly included only executives.

Whenever Preston’s mother, Margaret, insulted her in front of the staff.

Emily had been told the same thing.

Smile.

Stay quiet.

Don’t embarrass yourself.

Tonight, Preston had finally pushed too far.

He had made her kneel.

Eight months pregnant.

In front of nearly three hundred people.

Because Vanessa claimed Emily had deliberately spilled champagne near her shoes.

Emily had apologized.

Preston had demanded more.

“Kneel.”

She had thought he was joking.

Then Preston had placed his hand on her shoulder.

And pushed.

The guests had watched.

Nobody intervened.

Emily looked around the ballroom now.

Some people avoided her eyes.

Others suddenly looked ashamed.

Interesting.

They had found their consciences only after hearing the word inheritance.

Emily’s phone vibrated again.

She looked at the message.

WE ARE AT THE EAST ENTRANCE.

DO NOT LEAVE WITH PRESTON.

— DANIEL MERCER

Emily knew that name.

Daniel Mercer had been her father’s personal attorney for twenty-seven years.

She had not spoken to him since the funeral.

Another message appeared.

AND DO NOT SIGN ANYTHING.

Emily’s heartbeat quickened.

Preston noticed.

“Who are you texting?”

“That’s none of your business.”

His eyes narrowed.

“Everything you do is my business.”

“Not anymore.”

A murmur moved through the crowd.

Vanessa stepped closer.

“Preston, she’s obviously emotional.”

Emily turned toward her.

Vanessa froze.

For the first time that evening, Emily truly looked at the woman her husband had defended again and again.

Thirty-two.

Elegant.

Confident.

Wearing a silver evening gown that probably cost more than some people earned in six months.

And on her wrist was something Emily recognized.

A diamond bracelet.

Emily’s diamond bracelet.

Her mother’s bracelet.

Emily had searched for it for nearly a year.

Preston had told her she must have misplaced it.

Emily stared.

Vanessa instinctively lowered her wrist.

Too late.

“Where did you get that?”

Vanessa glanced at Preston.

That single glance answered everything.

Emily felt something cold settle inside her.

Preston stepped between them.

“We’re going home.”

“No.”

“We are not discussing this here.”

“There’s nothing left to discuss.”

Preston leaned closer.

His voice dropped.

“You are still my wife.”

Emily met his eyes.

“And you just forced your pregnant wife onto her knees for another woman.”

His jaw tightened.

“You’re twisting what happened.”

Three hundred witnesses had just watched it happen.

Yet Preston was still trying to rewrite reality.

Emily almost admired the arrogance.

Almost.

The ballroom doors suddenly opened.

Two men entered.

The first was in his late sixties.

Silver hair.

Dark navy suit.

Leather briefcase.

Daniel Mercer.

The second was younger.

Perhaps forty.

Tall.

Serious.

Carrying a thick black case.

Preston went completely still.

Emily saw it.

Not confusion.

Recognition.

“You know them,” she said.

Preston did not answer.

Daniel crossed the ballroom.

People stepped aside automatically.

When he reached Emily, his expression softened.

“Mrs. Emily Harrington.”

Preston interrupted.

“Vale.”

Daniel looked at him.

“Not for the purpose of the documents I’m carrying.”

That sentence hit Preston harder than a slap.

Daniel turned back to Emily.

“Your father instructed us to find you tonight if a specific condition occurred.”

Emily frowned.

“What condition?”

Daniel glanced around the ballroom.

“Public humiliation.”

Nobody moved.

Emily felt the air leave her lungs.

“What?”

“Your father believed Preston might eventually attempt to humiliate or intimidate you publicly.”

Preston scoffed.

“This is insane.”

Daniel ignored him.

“He left written instructions.”

Emily swallowed.

“How could he possibly know?”

Daniel looked directly at Preston.

“Because he had been investigating your husband for fourteen months.”

Preston’s face changed.

Only slightly.

But Emily saw it.

Daniel continued.

“Your father discovered financial irregularities involving Harrington Global.”

Preston stepped forward.

“That is confidential corporate information.”

Daniel finally turned to him.

“No.”

“It was stolen corporate information.”

The younger attorney opened the black case.

Inside were several sealed envelopes.

A hard drive.

Two folders.

And a small digital recorder.

Preston’s face lost color.

Emily noticed.

“What is that?”

Daniel looked at her.

“Your father’s final investigation.”

Emily reached toward the folder.

Preston suddenly grabbed her wrist.

“No.”

The room erupted in shocked whispers.

Daniel immediately stepped forward.

“Remove your hand from my client.”

“She is my wife.”

“She is also the controlling beneficiary of the Harrington estate.”

Preston’s fingers loosened.

Emily pulled her wrist away.

Daniel’s voice remained calm.

“And as of 4:00 p.m. today, she became the controlling shareholder of Harrington Global.”

Preston stared at him.

“That’s impossible.”

“It is already recorded.”

“You can’t transfer those shares without board approval.”

“Arthur Harrington could.”

“He founded the company.”

Daniel paused.

“And he retained voting control through the Harrington Family Trust.”

Preston’s lips parted.

Emily suddenly understood.

The mansion.

The company.

The private aircraft.

The investment accounts.

The properties Preston constantly described as his achievements.

Her father had financed the foundation beneath all of it.

Daniel handed Emily the first envelope.

Her father’s handwriting was across the front.

FOR EMILY.

ONLY AFTER THE TRIGGER EVENT.

Her hands trembled.

She broke the seal.

Inside was one sheet of paper.

Emily recognized her father’s handwriting immediately.

My darling Emily,

If you are reading this, then Preston finally became arrogant enough to show you in public what he has been doing in private.

Emily stopped breathing.

She read the sentence again.

Preston suddenly moved toward her.

“Give me that.”

Daniel blocked him.

Emily continued.

Do not confront him alone.

Do not return home with him.

Do not trust anyone who tells you that I was confused before my death.

And most importantly—

Do not believe that Preston married you for your money.

Emily frowned.

That made no sense.

Then she read the next line.

He married you for something far more valuable.

Her hands became cold.

At the bottom of the page were six words.

Ask Daniel about Project Meridian.

Emily raised her eyes.

“What is Project Meridian?”

For the first time, Daniel hesitated.

Preston turned toward the ballroom doors.

The younger attorney immediately moved into his path.

Daniel looked at Emily.

“Project Meridian was something your father discovered six weeks before he died.”

“What?”

Daniel opened the second folder.

Inside was a photograph.

He handed it to her.

Emily looked down.

Her stomach dropped.

The photograph showed Preston.

Vanessa stood beside him.

They were outside a private medical facility.

But they were not alone.

A third person stood with them.

Emily knew the man.

Dr. Marcus Bell.

Her father’s private physician.

Emily looked at Daniel.

“What were they doing together?”

Daniel’s answer was almost a whisper.

“That is exactly what your father wanted to know.”

May you like

Then Preston lunged for the photograph.

And the ballroom exploded into chaos.
