Chapter 8 - THE PRICE HE PUT ON MY FATHER

I stared at my father's name until the letters blurred.

Thomas Marlowe.

Twenty-five million dollars.

Contingency Removal.

"What does removal mean?"

No one answered.

Margaret didn't guess.

Daniel didn't speculate.

The investigators photographed every page.

I called my father.

He arrived twenty minutes later.

When he saw the ledger, his expression barely changed.

That frightened me.

"Have you seen this before?"

"No."

"Do you know what it means?"

"No."

"Are you sure?"

He looked at me.

"Elena."

There was hurt in his voice.

"I have never lied to you about Julian."

I almost corrected him.

Then stopped.

He had withheld the succession meeting.

But that wasn't the same thing.

I nodded.

"I'm sorry."

My father studied the entry again.

"Twenty-five million is too much for a bribe."

Margaret looked up.

"Which means?"

"It could be a reserve."

"For what?"

My father sat down.

"To buy my voting position."

"You can't sell it."

"Correct."

"Julian knew that."

"Yes."

My father pointed to the word Removal.

"So perhaps he was not planning to buy me."

Cold moved through the room.

"Are you suggesting he wanted to hurt you?"

"I am suggesting nothing."

My father remained calm.

"We let professionals determine what this means."

The answer came sooner than expected.

One of the hard drives contained audio files.

Most were business meetings Julian secretly recorded.

One was different.

Two male voices.

Julian's was obvious.

The second belonged to a private investigator named Warren Pike.

The recording was eighteen months old.

Julian asked Pike to investigate my father's health.

Medication.

Travel patterns.

Security arrangements.

Succession plans.

Then Julian asked what would happen to the trust if Thomas became "incapacitated."

Pike explained that control would move to me.

Julian went silent.

Then asked whether a spouse could exercise influence over a beneficiary who was temporarily unable to perform her duties.

I felt sick.

He had been researching not just my father's removal.

Mine.

Margaret stopped the recording.

"That's enough."

"No."

I pressed play.

Julian's voice returned.

"What if Elena voluntarily transfers proxy authority?"

Pike answered.

"Then you'd have whatever authority the proxy grants."

"Could it be irrevocable?"

"Not normally."

"What if she signs while under medical care?"

I stopped breathing.

The recording continued.

Pike sounded uncomfortable.

"If you're asking whether a medicated person can legally transfer control, you need an attorney."

Julian laughed.

"Forget I asked."

The audio ended.

No one spoke.

My father reached for my hand.

His fingers were cold.

"This was not a business coup."

Margaret's voice was quiet.

"No."

"This was a family takeover."

I thought back to the previous year.

Julian had pushed me repeatedly to change estate attorneys.

He said my family's lawyers were old-fashioned.

He wanted us to create new marital trusts.

He suggested consolidating certain voting rights "for efficiency."

I had refused because my grandmother taught me never to modify the core trust structure.

Julian had called me paranoid.

Now I understood why he had been frustrated.

The structure wasn't merely protecting my money.

It had been protecting me.

That night, authorities located Warren Pike.

He had more to say.

Julian had hired him to investigate vulnerabilities inside the Marlowe family structure.

Not to physically harm anyone.

At least Pike insisted he never received such an instruction.

But Julian wanted leverage.

Medical leverage.

Marital leverage.

Financial leverage.

Anything that could push my father aside and pressure me into surrendering control.

Then Pike revealed something else.

"There was another person."

"Who?"

"A lawyer."

"Name?"

He hesitated.

"Richard Hale."

My father went pale.

I knew that name.

Richard Hale had been my grandfather's estate attorney.

He had drafted part of the original Marlowe trust.

And according to family records, Richard Hale had died four years earlier.

Except Warren Pike claimed he had met with him nine months ago.
