Chapter 13 - THE LAST BOARDROOM BATTLE

Julian returned three days later.

Not voluntarily.

His attorneys arranged his surrender after authorities issued warrants connected to financial records, alleged fraud, and obstruction.

The criminal allegations would take months, perhaps years, to resolve.

I wasn't interested in pretending he had already been convicted.

That decision belonged to courts.

But the corporate evidence was enough for the board.

The final shareholder meeting took place on Friday.

Julian attended remotely with counsel.

He looked tired.

For the first time since I had known him, there was no perfect lighting.

No tailored stage.

No assistant adjusting his microphone.

Just a man sitting beside two lawyers.

My father opened the meeting.

Julian interrupted.

"I want Elena removed from the vote."

Margaret answered.

"On what basis?"

"Personal conflict."

I almost admired the audacity.

Margaret didn't.

"Mr. Rossi, you initiated an affair with a subordinate, transferred corporate funds through related entities, attempted to pledge assets beyond your authority, and created a competing company."

Her voice remained flat.

"The fact that Mrs. Rossi is divorcing you does not invalidate her voting rights."

Julian leaned toward the camera.

"She is using family money to crush me."

I spoke for the first time.

"No."

His eyes found mine on the screen.

"I'm using governance documents you signed."

He stared at me.

I continued.

"You always thought my family's wealth was the weapon."

"It wasn't."

"The rules were."

The meeting lasted four hours.

Evidence was presented.

Audit findings.

Emails.

Authorization logs.

Recorded conversations.

The Monaco transfers.

The shell vendors.

The attempted collateral pledges.

Finally, the board voted to permanently remove Julian from all executive roles.

His unvested compensation was canceled.

Certain vested compensation remained subject to legal proceedings.

His corporate privileges ended.

His membership in the private residence program was revoked.

Then came the vote Julian feared most.

JR Crown Hospitality had registered trademarks and development plans derived from confidential Marlowe materials.

The board authorized litigation to prevent their use.

Julian exploded.

"You can't take that too."

I looked at him.

"We aren't taking it."

"You stole my company."

"You used ours to build it."

"Everything I have came from my work."

"No one denies you worked."

"Then why do you act like I contributed nothing?"

There it was.

The question underneath every other question.

I thought before answering.

"You contributed a great deal."

Julian looked surprised.

"You were ambitious."

"You could sell a vision."

"You inspired investors."

"You made people believe expansion was possible before the numbers proved it."

"For years, you were excellent at what you did."

His face softened slightly.

Then I continued.

"But somewhere along the way, you decided contributing meant owning."

"You stopped seeing partners."

"You saw assets."

"You stopped seeing employees."

"You saw servants."

"You stopped seeing me."

My voice almost broke.

"You saw access."

The boardroom went silent.

Julian stared through the screen.

"You loved me."

"Yes."

"Then how can you do this?"

I felt something inside me finally release.

Because for months, maybe years, some part of me had asked the opposite question.

If he loved me, how could he do any of this?

Now I understood.

"My love was never permission."

Julian leaned back.

His lawyer touched his arm.

The final motion passed.

When the screen went dark, no one celebrated.

My father closed his folder.

"It's over."

I shook my head.

"Not yet."

Because there was still the penthouse.

Still our homes.

Still the divorce.

Still employees who had learned to fear management.

Still a company built around one man's ego.

Removing Julian was easier than removing the culture he left behind.

And if I wanted the empire to survive, I couldn't simply take his chair.

I had to change what the chair meant.
