Chapter 9 - THE RECORDING

Julian stood so quickly his chair nearly fell.
"You."
Vanessa stopped beside Margaret.
Julian pointed at her.
"You stole confidential information."
Vanessa's face remained calm.
"No."
She held up her phone.
"You gave it to me."
"You have no idea what you've done."
"I know exactly what I've done."
Margaret spoke.
"Sit down, Mr. Mercer."
Julian ignored her.
He looked at me.
"Elena, this is ridiculous."
"Sit down."
"I can explain."
"Then sit down and explain."
He did.
Margaret played the recordings.
Julian listened to his own voice describe how he intended to dismantle the ownership structure.
How he planned to move contracts.
How he planned to divorce me afterward.
How he believed my family was too passive to stop him.
Nobody interrupted.
Then came the final recording.
Julian was laughing.
By the time Elena realizes what's happening, she'll have nothing except her family name.
The recording ended.
Silence.
Julian stared at the table.
I thought hearing it would destroy me.
It didn't.
The woman he had planned to leave with nothing no longer existed.
"Is that your voice?"
Margaret asked.
Julian didn't answer.
"Mr. Mercer?"
"Yes."
"Did you authorize Project Dawn?"
"My attorneys need to review—"
"Did you authorize it?"
Julian looked at me.
"Elena, you don't understand."
"Then help me understand."
He stood.
"For nine years, I worked eighteen-hour days."
"So did I."
"I turned Bellavue into a global brand."
"We did."
"No."
He slammed his hand on the table.
"I did."
There it was.
The belief beneath everything.
I looked at him sadly.
"You still don't see it."
"See what?"
"You never wanted a partner."
His expression shifted.
"You wanted an audience."
He said nothing.
"As long as I stood beside you and applauded, you loved me."
"That's not true."
"The moment you suspected I had power you couldn't control, you started planning to remove me."
"I was protecting what I built."
"You were stealing what we built."
Julian looked around the room.
"This entire meeting is illegal."
Margaret almost smiled.
"No, it isn't."
"I want independent counsel."
"Already arranged."
"I want a shareholder vote."
Daniel responded.
"You just had one."
Julian froze.
"What?"
"At 4:12 a.m."
Daniel pushed a document across the table.
The resolution was simple.
Removal of Julian Mercer from all executive positions.
Vote.
Fourteen in favor.
One abstention.
Zero opposed.
Julian stared at it.
"No."
Daniel continued.
"Your employment is terminated effective immediately."
Julian looked at me.
"You did this."
I shook my head.
"No."
I pointed toward Project Dawn.
"You did."
He pushed back from the table.
"You'll regret this."
Security officers appeared at the doors.
Julian laughed.
"You're going to have me dragged out?"
I remembered the rain.
The guests.
The humiliation.
The words.
This is my resort.
You don't belong here anymore.
I could have ordered security to remove him.
Instead, I stood.
"No."
Julian looked confused.
I walked to the door and opened it.
"You can walk."
His jaw tightened.
"How generous."
"It isn't generosity."
I met his eyes.
"It's the difference between you and me."
He walked past me.
Then stopped.
"This isn't over."
I looked at the clock.
5:31 a.m.
"No."
I agreed.
"It isn't."

Because in twenty-nine minutes, Julian's secret transfer was scheduled to execute.
And federal banking monitors had already been notified.
