Chapter 2 - THE EMPIRE HE NEVER OWNED

I met my father forty minutes later at the Whitmore townhouse.
Julian had been there only twice.
He hated it.
He called it old-fashioned.
He had no idea that the modest-looking building served as the legal headquarters for assets worth billions.
Margaret Shaw was already waiting in the library.
So were three attorneys.
A corporate security director.
And Daniel Price, chairman of Bellavue Hospitality Group.
Daniel rose when I entered.
"Elena."
"How bad is it?"
He exchanged a look with my father.
"Worse than we thought."
A thick folder waited on the table.
Margaret pushed it toward me.
"We began reviewing Julian's transactions after your call."
"You found something already?"
"Several things."
I opened the folder.
Transfers.
Invoices.
Consulting payments.
Luxury purchases.
One name appeared repeatedly.
VC Lifestyle Management.
"Vanessa Cole?"
Margaret nodded.
"Her company."
My stomach tightened.
"How much?"
"At least four point eight million dollars over eighteen months."
I looked up.
"From where?"
"Bellavue marketing accounts."
Julian hadn't merely cheated on me.
He had apparently used company money to finance the affair.
Daniel slid another document forward.
"There's more."
A penthouse renovation.
Three hundred and twenty thousand dollars.
Private flights.
One hundred and eighty-seven thousand.
Jewelry.
Two hundred and forty thousand.
Then I saw the emerald pendant.
No price.
Just a photograph.
"Where did you get this?"
"Our insurance investigator."
My father answered.
"Your grandmother's necklace wasn't lost."
I already knew.
But hearing him say it still hurt.
"Julian removed it from your safe."
Margaret pointed toward an insurance document.
"Then he attempted to claim it as missing property."
I stared at the signature.
Julian Mercer.
My husband.
I remembered that evening.
He had kissed my forehead.
He had told me not to blame myself.
He had said possessions could always be replaced.
I closed the folder.
"How long have you known?"
My father looked uncomfortable.
"About Vanessa?"
"About any of this."
"Not long."
"That's not an answer."
"Six weeks."
I stood.
"You knew for six weeks?"
"We suspected financial misconduct."
"And you didn't tell me?"
"We were gathering evidence."
"He was humiliating me while everyone around me was gathering evidence."
My father stood too.
"I was trying to protect you."
"No."
I shook my head.
"You were trying to protect the company."
He didn't deny it.
That hurt more.
Daniel broke the silence.
"Elena, there is another issue."
I looked at him.
"Julian scheduled a board vote for tomorrow morning."
"What vote?"
Daniel placed a document on the table.
PROPOSED CORPORATE RESTRUCTURING.
I read the first page.
Then the second.
My anger disappeared.
Something colder replaced it.
"He was trying to separate Bellavue Operations from the property holdings."
"Correct."
"Why?"
Margaret answered.
"Because he believed that if he controlled the operating company, he could force the trusts into renegotiating ownership."
I almost laughed.
"He thought he could steal the empire."
"Not steal."
My father corrected me.
"Leverage."
I looked at him.
"That's a polite word for theft."
He nodded slowly.
"Fair enough."
Daniel checked his phone.
"Julian still believes tomorrow's meeting is happening."
"Let him."
Everyone looked at me.
My father frowned.
"Elena?"
"Don't cancel it."
Margaret understood first.
"You want him there."
"I want everyone there."
"Why?"
I looked down at the restructuring proposal.
For years, Julian had told newspapers that he built Bellavue from nothing.
He told investors he had rescued a sleepy regional hotel company and transformed it into a global luxury brand.
I never corrected him.
Because I loved him.
Because I believed marriage wasn't supposed to be a competition.
Because when he succeeded, I thought we succeeded.
I had been wrong.
"Julian wanted a board meeting."
I closed the folder.
"He's going to get one."
My phone vibrated.
A message from an unknown number.
YOU THINK YOU WON?
A photograph followed.
Vanessa.
Sitting in my penthouse bedroom.
Wearing my coat.
Wearing my grandmother's emerald.
Then another message.
HE CHOSE ME.
I stared at it for several seconds.
Margaret asked quietly.
"What is it?"
I turned the phone around.
My father went pale.
Daniel muttered something under his breath.
I typed four words.
KEEP THE NECKLACE ON.
Vanessa responded almost immediately.
GLADLY.
I smiled.
Margaret noticed.
"Why did you tell her that?"
"Because tomorrow morning..."
May you like
I placed my phone on the table.
"...I want everyone to see exactly what Julian stole."
