Chapter 3: The Evidence Nobody Expected

Julian demanded a lawyer before security even reached him.
"This is harassment!" he shouted.
"You can't detain me because of some ridiculous theory."
Dr. Hayes remained calm.
"No."
"But fraud investigators can."
Almost on cue, two detectives entered the maternity floor carrying identification badges.
One of them looked directly at me.
"Mrs. Carter?"
I nodded.
"I'm Detective Olivia Grant."
She held up a thick file.
"We've been investigating Julian Vance and Eleanor Vance for nearly eighteen months."
Julian's face drained of color.
The detective continued.
"We were waiting for one final financial connection."
I slowly reached beneath my hospital bed.
From my overnight bag, I removed the weathered folder I had protected for months.
"I think I have it."
Inside were hundreds of pages.
Wire transfers.
Shell-company contracts.
Forged invoices.
Secret emails.
One email made Detective Grant stop reading.
Eleanor had written:
If Vivian keeps fighting, we'll bankrupt her before the baby comes. A desperate woman signs anything.
Another email was worse.
Destroy every record from the adoption.
Nobody can ever know where Julian came from.
The detective slowly closed the folder.
"This is enough."
Julian lunged toward me.
"You stole private documents!"
Before he could reach the bed, security restrained him.
For the first time since our divorce...
Julian looked afraid.
Not because he had lost me.
Because he had finally lost control.
As officers handcuffed him, Eleanor rushed into the room screaming.
"My son has done nothing wrong!"
Detective Grant faced her calmly.
"We have warrants for both of you."
Eleanor's expression collapsed.

Within minutes, mother and son were escorted from the hospital together.
Neither one looked back.
