Julian Vance entered the delivery room as though he owned it.

His tailored charcoal suit looked painfully out of place beside the hospital bed where I lay exhausted, my newborn son sleeping peacefully in the doctor's arms.

"There she is," Julian said with a smirk. "I heard you finally delivered."

He never looked at me.

His attention went straight to the baby.

"I suppose I should see what all the fuss is about."

Dr. Daniel Hayes didn't move.

Instead, he held the infant a little closer.

"You'll stay where you are, Mr. Vance."

Julian frowned.

"I'm the father."

The doctor's jaw tightened.

"Are you?"

The room fell silent.

Julian laughed.

"What exactly is that supposed to mean?"

Dr. Hayes looked at me first, almost apologetically.

"Mrs. Carter... years ago, before I became chief of pediatrics, I specialized in neonatal genetics."

I stared at him without understanding.

He continued.

"Your son's face carries a congenital birthmark."

I blinked.

"What birthmark?"

He gently unfolded the baby's tiny blanket, revealing a faint crescent-shaped mark behind his left ear.

"It isn't dangerous," he explained. "In fact, it's incredibly rare."

Julian's confidence returned.

"So?"

Dr. Hayes swallowed.

"I've only seen it twice in my career."

He slowly raised his eyes.

"The first time... was twenty-eight years ago."

Julian's smile disappeared.

"I delivered a baby boy with that exact genetic marker."

His voice became almost inaudible.

"That child was adopted after a hospital kidnapping investigation."

Julian's breathing stopped.

"And that child's name..."

The doctor looked directly into Julian's eyes.

"...was Julian Vance."

The room seemed to freeze.

Julian took one slow step backward.

"That's impossible."

"No," Dr. Hayes replied quietly.

"The impossible part is that your biological records were sealed... because someone altered them."

A cold silence settled over the room.

Then Dr. Hayes looked at me.

"I believe your husband has been living under a false identity his entire life."

Julian suddenly turned toward the door.

"I don't have time for this."

But before he reached the hallway, two hospital security officers appeared.
