Chapter 2 – The Face That Should Have Been Impossible

Julian Vance stopped smiling the instant he saw the doctor holding the baby.

He hadn't come to congratulate me.

He had come to make sure I signed the last property settlement before leaving the hospital.

"I heard you were in labor," he said coldly. "I thought it would be easier to finish everything now."

The doctor ignored him.

Instead, he kept staring between Julian's face and the tiny newborn in his arms.

Finally, he whispered, almost to himself,

"No... this can't be happening."

Julian frowned.

"What are you talking about?"

The doctor slowly walked closer until the three of us stood only a few feet apart.

"I've been delivering babies for thirty-two years," he said quietly. "And I've only seen this genetic condition once."

Neither of us spoke.

The doctor gently pulled back the baby's blanket, revealing a small crescent-shaped birthmark beneath his left shoulder.

Julian's face remained expressionless.

Then the doctor pointed toward Julian's neck.

"You have the exact same mark."

Julian instinctively covered his shoulder.

His confidence cracked for the first time.

"The odds of this exact hereditary mutation appearing in an unrelated child are virtually impossible."

Silence swallowed the room.

The doctor lowered his voice.

"This little boy is unquestionably your biological son."

I watched Julian's face lose every trace of arrogance.

Not because he suddenly cared.

Because he realized every lie he had told about me had just collapsed.

Then Eleanor rushed into the room.

She looked from the baby to Julian before glaring at me.

"Don't believe this woman," she snapped. "She's manipulated everyone from the beginning."

The doctor stood straighter.

"Madam, I don't know your family."

"But I know genetics."

"And I know what I see."

Julian's jaw tightened.

Without another word, he grabbed Eleanor's arm and pulled her into the hallway.

They thought I couldn't hear them.

They were wrong.

"If this child is proven to be mine," Julian hissed, "everything changes."

Eleanor answered immediately.

"Then don't let it be proven."

A cold shiver ran through my body.

May you like

For the first time, I realized they weren't afraid of losing me.

They were afraid of losing something far more valuable.
