Chapter 13 - THE FINAL RECORDING

The memory card contained a video.

Daniel had apparently carried it for years.

Investigators believed he slipped it into the ledger because he intended to use it as leverage if he was arrested.

The recording had been made inside Michael Grant’s house on the night he died.

A security camera had captured part of the staircase.

Michael stood near the top.

Vanessa faced him.

Daniel appeared moments later.

There was shouting.

Michael pointed toward the door.

Daniel stepped forward.

Vanessa tried to stop him.

Then Daniel shoved Michael.

Michael fell.

The video removed any remaining doubt.

Vanessa had lied about details.

But she had told the truth about the final moment.

Daniel caused Michael’s fatal fall.

Then the recording continued.

Vanessa moved toward Michael.

She reached for her phone.

Daniel grabbed her wrist.

“He’s gone.”

“We need an ambulance.”

“No.”

“Daniel.”

“Think.”

Vanessa stared down the stairs.

Daniel leaned close to her.

“You call anyone, and we both lose everything.”

The recording ended.

But another file explained why the card carried Emily’s name.

Years later, Daniel had recorded a conversation with Vanessa.

“You should never have approached Bennett.”

Daniel said.

“I needed the files.”

“You married him.”

“It gave me access.”

“And now you have a child watching everything you do.”

“She’s four.”

“So was every adult once.”

Vanessa sounded irritated.

“Leave Sophie out of this.”

Daniel laughed.

“You’re getting sentimental.”

Then Vanessa said something Ethan never expected.

“I won’t let you do to Sophie what you did to Lucy.”

Daniel’s response was immediate.

“Then keep Ethan under control.”

Ethan listened twice.

Vanessa had harmed Sophie.

She had frightened her.

Isolated her.

Manipulated her.

Nothing could erase that.

But the recording proved another truth.

Vanessa had also been afraid of Daniel.

Two things could be true at once.

She could be a victim of Daniel’s control.

And she could still be responsible for what she chose to do to Sophie.

Ethan refused to turn one truth into an excuse for the other.

Months passed.

Daniel was charged with crimes connected to Michael’s death, Lucy’s abduction, financial fraud, blackmail, and the kidnapping of Sophie.

Vanessa faced charges related to financial crimes, obstruction, unlawful confinement, child mistreatment, and her role in concealing Michael’s death.

She accepted a plea agreement on several counts while prosecutors continued pursuing others.

Ethan filed for divorce.

There was no dramatic confrontation.

No final argument.

He signed the papers.

Vanessa signed them from custody.

She wrote Sophie a letter.

Ethan did not give it to his daughter.

Not yet.

He placed it in a sealed envelope.

One day, when Sophie was older, she could decide whether she wanted to read it.

That choice would belong to Sophie.

Not Vanessa.

Not Ethan.

Sophie began seeing a child therapist.

Progress came slowly.

At first, she refused to enter any room with a closed door.

Then she began closing doors herself.

Just for a second.

Then five seconds.

Then longer.

One afternoon, Ethan waited outside the therapist’s office.

Sophie came running toward him.

“Daddy!”

He opened his arms.

She jumped into them.

“I did something.”

“What?”

“I told Dr. Hannah the whole story.”

Ethan smiled.

“That was brave.”

Sophie shook her head.

“No.”

He looked at her.

“What do you mean?”

She leaned close.

“I was scared.”

Then she smiled.

“But I did it anyway.”

Ethan kissed her forehead.

“That’s what brave means.”

That night, Sophie slept without asking Ethan to check the closet.

It was the first time in months.

Ethan stood in her doorway watching her breathe.

Then his phone vibrated.

A message from Rachel.

We found something belonging to Emily.

Ethan stared at the screen.

Attached was a photograph.

It showed a sealed envelope recovered from Daniel’s cabin.

May you like

Across the front, in Emily’s handwriting, were three words.

FOR ETHAN ONLY.
