Chapter 11 - WHAT VANESSA FINALLY SAID

Sophie had a small cut on her knee.
Nothing more.
When Ethan reached her, she ran so hard into his arms that he nearly fell backward.
“Daddy!”
He held her.
“I’ve got you.”
“Don’t let me go.”
“I won’t.”
Vanessa had been wounded while trying to stop Daniel from dragging Sophie down the rocky trail.
The injury was serious but not fatal.
She underwent surgery under police guard.
Daniel escaped through a narrow canyon leading toward the highway.
A statewide search began.
Two days later, Vanessa agreed to talk.
Ethan did not attend the interview.
He did not want to see her.
Rachel later told him what Vanessa confessed.
Yes.
She had stolen money from Michael.
Yes.
She had threatened him.
Yes.
She had been present when he fell.
But she claimed she had not pushed him.
According to Vanessa, Daniel had arrived during their argument.
Michael threatened to expose both of them.
Daniel struck him.
Michael lost his balance and fell down the stairs.
Vanessa froze.
Daniel convinced her they could call it an accident.
She agreed.
That decision trapped her for years.
Whenever Vanessa considered leaving, Daniel reminded her that he had evidence.
Then Lucy began asking questions.
Daniel abducted her.
Vanessa helped cover it up.
Lucy eventually escaped.
Vanessa believed she had fled the state.
Emily became the next problem.
Vanessa visited her and demanded Michael’s evidence.
Emily refused.
But Vanessa insisted she had nothing to do with Emily’s illness or death.
Investigators found no evidence contradicting that claim.
The cruelty toward Sophie was different.
There was no Daniel to blame.
Vanessa admitted she had become obsessed with controlling the little girl.
Sophie reminded her of Lucy.
Every question felt like a threat.
Every mention of Ethan made Vanessa feel exposed.
So she punished Sophie for things that were not wrong.
Crying.
Missing her father.
Asking questions.
Telling the truth.
When Rachel finished explaining, Ethan sat silently.
“Does she expect forgiveness?”
“No.”
“Good.”
“She asked whether Sophie is okay.”
Ethan looked at Rachel.
“She doesn’t get to ask that.”
Rachel nodded.
Vanessa had provided information about Daniel.
Properties.
Accounts.
Aliases.
One location stood out.
A cabin near Big Bear.
Police searched it.
Daniel was gone.
But they found a laptop.
On it were copies of financial records reaching back twenty years.
Daniel had done the same thing with other clients.
Michael had not been his first victim.
Vanessa had not been his only partner.
There were shell companies.
Fake loans.
Insurance schemes.
Blackmail payments.
And one folder labeled BENNETT.
Inside were documents about Ethan’s company.
Rachel called him immediately.
“Daniel wasn’t just watching your family.”
“What was he doing?”
“Preparing another theft.”
Daniel had gathered signatures.
Account numbers.
Corporate records.
He had planned to steal millions from Ethan.
Vanessa’s marriage had given him access.
Ethan stared at the ocean outside Claire’s house.
“So I was always the next target.”
“Yes.”
Then Rachel opened another file.
Her face changed.
“What?”
“It’s a schedule.”
“For what?”
“Daniel has been tracking you.”
Ethan felt cold.
“Where?”
Rachel read the final entry.
Thursday.
10:00 a.m.
Bennett Technologies headquarters.
Today was Thursday.
Ethan looked at the clock.
9:47.
Then his phone rang.
His assistant was calling from the office.
Ethan answered.
Her voice was frantic.
“Mr. Bennett, there’s a man downstairs asking for you.”
May you like
“What man?”
“He says his name is Daniel Mercer.”
