Chapter 2 — The House Was Never Hers

The room fell into absolute silence.
Even the ticking grandfather clock seemed louder.
My mother forced a laugh.
"I'm sorry, but I think you've come to the wrong address."
Robert Miller calmly removed a thick folder from his briefcase.
"I assure you, Mrs. Brooks, I have not."
He placed several notarized documents on the dining table.
"I drafted your late husband's final estate plan personally."
Chloe's confident smile began to fade.
Mom crossed her arms.
"My husband left everything to me."
Robert looked at her without emotion.
"No."
One word.
Cold.
Final.
"He left the marital assets to you."
He tapped another document.
"But this property was never part of the marital estate."
I frowned.
"What does that mean?"
Robert turned toward me.
"Twenty years ago your grandfather transferred this house directly into your father's private family trust."
He opened another page.
"Three months before your father's passing, he amended that trust."
Mom's breathing became uneven.
"No..."
Robert continued anyway.
"The beneficiary of this residence is Hannah Brooks."
The words echoed through the dining room.
Me.
The owner?
Jason stared at me with wide eyes.
Chloe suddenly stood.
"That's impossible!"
Robert slid the original deed across the table.
"Recorded and legally registered."
He looked directly at my mother.
"Which means..."
His voice became sharper.
"You had no legal authority to order Miss Brooks out of her own home."
No one spoke.
Mom's face turned ghost white.
"I..."
"You also had no authority to distribute property that does not belong to the estate."
Robert calmly pulled out another folder.
"Unfortunately..."
He adjusted his glasses.
"I've discovered several financial transactions that require explanation."
Chloe swallowed hard.
"What transactions?"
Robert opened the file.
"Luxury vehicle."
"Three overseas vacations."
"Jewelry purchases."
"Over four hundred thousand dollars withdrawn from accounts that should have remained frozen until probate."
Mom grabbed the papers.
"Those were family expenses!"
"No."
Robert shook his head.
"Those funds belonged to the estate."
He slowly closed the folder.
"And taking them without court authorization may constitute financial fraud."
The room exploded with panic.
Chloe grabbed her mother's arm.
"Mom..."
Jason finally spoke.
"Hannah..."
I didn't even look at him.
For the first time that night...
They were afraid.
But Robert wasn't finished.
He looked directly at me.
"Miss Brooks..."
"I have one more item your father instructed me to deliver only after his funeral."
He reached inside the briefcase again.
And removed a sealed white envelope.
