I Was Kicked Out of My Own Home… Until Dad's Final Secret Changed Everything

The slap came out of nowhere.

My head snapped to the side.

The entire dining room fell silent.

I stared at my mother in disbelief.

She had never hit me before.

Not once.

Not in twenty-eight years.

But tonight...

She did.

In front of everyone.

Family.

Friends.

Neighbors.

Even my boyfriend.

All because I said one sentence.

"I don't think Chloe should inherit all of Dad's estate."

My younger sister smiled from across the table.

Mom pointed toward the front door.

"Get out."

I blinked.

"What?"

"You heard me."

Her voice trembled with anger.

"Get out of my house."

Those words hurt almost as much as the slap.

My father had died only six weeks earlier.

I was still drowning in grief.

Yet my mother had already divided everything.

And apparently, I was never part of the plan.

"Mom..."

"No."

She cut me off.

"Chloe stayed here and took care of me."

A bitter laugh escaped my lips.

"She lives five minutes away."

Mom ignored me.

"You left for college."

I couldn't believe what I was hearing.

"That was ten years ago."

"Exactly."

A suffocating silence settled over the room.

Everyone knew it was wrong.

Not one person spoke.

Not even my boyfriend, Jason.

Coward.

My sister folded her arms.

"If you don't like it, leave."

I looked at her.

Really looked at her.

And suddenly...

Everything made sense.

The luxury car.

The designer handbags.

The sudden confidence.

She already knew.

She had known all along that she was getting everything.

I picked up my purse.

Fine.

If they wanted me gone...

I'd leave.

I had barely reached the front door when someone knocked.

Three sharp knocks.

Everyone turned.

A man in a tailored gray suit stepped inside.

A leather briefcase rested in his hand.

"Excuse me."

No one answered.

The stranger slowly scanned the room.

Then his eyes settled on me.

"Miss Hannah Brooks?"

"Yes?"

He offered a polite smile.

"I've been trying to reach you."

My mother frowned.

"And who are you?"

The man calmly opened his briefcase.

"My name is Robert Miller."

He paused just long enough for every eye in the room to lock onto him.

"I was your father's attorney."

The color drained from my mother's face.

Then he spoke the sentence that froze every person in the house.

"I believe there's been a very serious misunderstanding about who actually owns this house."
