Chapter 3 — The File They Never Wanted Her to Read

The folder arrived at the hospital under armed police escort.
Lucia requested everyone leave except the lead investigator.
Even Rodrigo waited outside.
The investigator placed the folder on her lap.
"You may not want to read this."
Lucia answered quietly.
"I've spent my entire career reading things powerful people hoped nobody ever would."
She opened it.
The first page stole the air from her lungs.
Her name.
Lucia Álvarez.
Age thirty-two.
Photograph.
Daily routine.
Friends.
Parents.
Financial records.
Medical history.
Every movement during the previous four years had been documented.
Page after page.
Someone had followed her long before Rodrigo proposed.
The final report read:
Subject selected.
Marriage approved.
Inheritance access probability: 97%.
Lucia stared at the page.
Inheritance?
She had never possessed extraordinary wealth.
Then another envelope slid free.
Inside was a birth certificate.
Not hers.
Her mother's.
Followed by documents proving something impossible.
Lucia's late grandfather had secretly owned thirty-eight percent of Grupo Castañeda before disappearing under mysterious circumstances decades earlier.
The shares had never vanished.
They legally belonged...
...to Lucia.
Rodrigo hadn't married a waitress.
He had married the largest hidden shareholder of the very empire his mother controlled.
Every insult.
Every humiliation.
Every family dinner.
Every fake apology.
Every "accident."
It had all been designed for one purpose.
To steal what had always belonged to Lucia.
Outside the room, Rodrigo slowly sank against the hallway wall.
He had spent seven years believing his mother wanted status.
Now he understood.
She had wanted ownership.
And he had helped her obtain it.
That evening, Beatriz requested one phone call from her holding cell.
She smiled while dialing from the detention center.
"You've all made a terrible mistake," she said calmly.
The man on the other end answered only once.
"I understand."
She smiled wider.
"They found the files."
"I expected they would."
"They'll arrest everyone."
A brief silence followed.
Then the voice replied,
"No."
"They'll arrest everyone you know."
The line went dead.
For the first time in decades...
Fear reached Beatriz.

She realized she had never been the head of the organization.
Only its most visible face.
