Chapter 2 — The Woman Who Counted Every Lie

Rodrigo's fingers loosened.

Both coffee cups crashed onto the polished hospital floor, hot coffee spreading beneath his expensive Italian shoes.

For one suspended heartbeat, no one moved.

The investigators' body cameras captured everything.

Beatriz's trembling hands.

The pillow still hovering inches above Lucia's face.

The fresh red marks across Lucia's bruised cheeks.

Then Beatriz performed the role she had perfected over decades.

"My God!" she cried, pressing both hands against her chest. "I was trying to help her breathe! She stopped breathing! I panicked!"

One investigator calmly stepped forward.

"Ma'am."

He pointed toward the tiny camera clipped beneath his jacket lapel.

"Would you like to repeat that?"

Her expression cracked for only a fraction of a second.

Long enough.

Lucia saw it.

The mask slipping.

Rodrigo finally found his voice.

"Mother..."

His words came out barely above a whisper.

"What... were you doing?"

Beatriz turned toward him with practiced disbelief.

"Rodrigo, don't be ridiculous. Your wife nearly suffocated. I was removing the pillow."

Another investigator walked directly to Lucia's bedside.

Without speaking, he opened a secure evidence bag.

Inside lay a tiny digital recorder.

Marisol had planted it beneath Lucia's mattress three days earlier.

The investigator pressed PLAY.

Beatriz's own voice filled the silent room.

"Next time... don't miss."

Rodrigo's face turned ghostly white.

The recording continued.

"Rodrigo deserves someone worthy."

"She should have died."

Every word echoed through the room with brutal clarity.

Beatriz slowly looked toward her son.

For the first time in her life...

She had no lie prepared.

An hour later, the hospital became a crime scene.

Detectives photographed the pillow.

Collected fingerprints.

Secured surveillance footage.

Interviewed every nurse.

Rodrigo remained seated outside Lucia's room with both elbows resting on his knees.

He looked like a man watching his entire life collapse one brick at a time.

Lucia finally spoke.

"Come inside."

He hesitated before entering.

She stared at him with exhausted eyes.

"You pushed me."

Rodrigo instantly shook his head.

"No."

"You grabbed my wrist."

"...Yes."

"You watched your mother loosen the railing."

His breathing stopped.

"I..."

"You knew."

Silence answered her.

Lucia closed her eyes.

"I don't need another confession."

She opened them again.

"I need the truth."

Rodrigo's shoulders finally collapsed.

"It wasn't supposed to happen like that."

Lucia felt nothing.

Not anger.

Not grief.

Only confirmation.

He buried his face in his hands.

"Mother said if you divorced me... everything your investigation had uncovered would destroy us."

Lucia's heartbeat slowed.

"So that's what this was about."

Rodrigo looked up.

"What?"

"My investigation never ended."

He frowned.

Lucia smiled for the first time.

It wasn't a smile of forgiveness.

It was the smile of a forensic accountant who had finally solved the equation.

"You thought I was investigating corruption before I married you."

"I never stopped."

That same afternoon, detectives searched the Alcázar mansion.

What they found wasn't merely tax fraud.

Hidden ledgers.

Encrypted hard drives.

Offshore banking records.

Fake charitable foundations.

Properties purchased through dead identities.

Millions became hundreds of millions.

Then billions.

Every document pointed toward one person.

Beatriz Castañeda.

But every signature belonged to another.

Rodrigo.

He hadn't been the mastermind.

He had been the shield.

The perfect heir whose clean reputation protected a criminal empire spanning nearly twenty years.

When investigators opened the final hidden safe behind an antique painting...

The room fell silent.

Inside rested a thick black folder.

May you like

Across its cover were four handwritten words.

IF LUCIA EVER LEAVES.
