Chapter 9 - What Happened Before the Crash
Marcus returned to the bridge.
Eleven years earlier, his car had broken through the barrier and fallen thirty feet into the river.
Marcus survived.
His driver did not.
At least, that was the official story.
Marcus stood near the reconstructed barrier.
Eli remained beside Daniel.
“Remember the bridge.”
Marcus closed his eyes.
Nothing.
Then Rebecca gave him something unexpected.
Not medication.
A sound.
She played the emergency call recorded the night of the accident.
Marcus listened.
Static.
Sirens.
Then his own voice.
Barely conscious.
“She knows.”
Rebecca paused it.
Marcus stared.
“What did I say?”
Daniel replayed it.
“She knows.”
Then another sentence.
“Get Anna out.”
Marcus's heart pounded.
He remembered.
Not everything.
A flash.
Anna inside his office.
Crying.
A kiss.
A promise.
Then another memory.
Marcus holding a pregnancy test.
Anna whispering,
“I'm pregnant.”
Marcus opened his eyes.
Eli stared at him.
Marcus finally understood.
He had known.
Before the crash, Marcus knew Anna was carrying his child.
His memories hadn't simply disappeared.
Someone had made sure they stayed buried.
Then Marcus remembered something else.
A man beside his hospital bed.
Richard.
“You don't remember Anna.”
“You never met her.”
Marcus nearly collapsed.
Daniel caught him.
Marcus whispered.
“He knew.”
Then a voice came from behind them.
“Yes.”
Marcus turned.
Richard Hale stood ten yards away.
Alone.
Marcus stared at his uncle.
