Chapter 14 - Eleven Years Stolen

The final memories returned slowly.

Anna had been in Marcus's car.

She was thrown clear before the vehicle entered the river.

Richard's people found her first.

Marcus was rescued by strangers.

Anna was taken.

The Circle separated them.

Marcus's head injury made manipulation easy.

Richard erased Anna from his life.

Anna gave birth to Eli in hiding.

Daniel secretly helped her escape.

Then Richard found her again.

Every betrayal had another betrayal beneath it.

But now the evidence existed.

The Lazarus ledger was discovered inside Samuel's medical equipment.

Names filled hundreds of pages.

Calvin Price was arrested at the airport.

Three insurance executives were indicted.

Two hospital administrators resigned before being charged.

Federal investigators raided Hale Biodyne.

Richard Hale attempted to negotiate immunity.

Marcus refused to help him.

Their final meeting happened in an interrogation room.

Richard sat behind glass.

Marcus entered walking with a cane.

Richard stared at him.

“You look like your father.”

Marcus sat.

“You killed him.”

Richard looked away.

“He was going to destroy everything.”

“So you destroyed him.”

Richard said nothing.

Marcus leaned forward.

“Why keep me alive?”

Richard finally looked at him.

“Because I loved you.”

Marcus laughed once.

There was no humor in it.

“You don't know what that word means.”

Richard's eyes filled with something close to regret.

“I couldn't kill my brother's son.”

“So you imprisoned him instead.”

Richard lowered his head.

Marcus stood.

Richard looked at his legs.

“You'll never get those years back.”

Marcus paused at the door.

“No.”

Richard almost smiled.

Then Marcus continued.

“But you're going to spend yours watching me live the ones you couldn't steal.”

Marcus walked out.

He never visited Richard again.

But one final problem remained.

Daniel Mercer.

The man who had lied to Marcus for eleven years.

The man who had also saved Eli and Anna.

Marcus had to decide whether betrayal could ever coexist with protection.

Daniel stood outside the courthouse waiting.

He handed Marcus his security badge.

“I won't ask you to forgive me.”

“Good.”

“I don't.”

Daniel nodded.

Marcus looked at the badge.

“You should have told me.”

“I know.”

“You should have trusted me.”

“I know.”

“You let me sit in that chair.”

Daniel's jaw tightened.

“I know.”

Marcus handed the badge back.

Daniel frowned.

“This isn't forgiveness.”

Marcus said.

“It's evidence.”

“Federal investigators want everything you know.”

Daniel understood.

“You're turning me in.”

“Yes.”

Daniel nodded slowly.

“Fair.”

He walked toward the agents.

Then Marcus called his name.

Daniel turned.

Marcus looked at him.

“You saved my son.”

Daniel said nothing.

Marcus continued.

“That matters.”

“But it doesn't erase what you did.”

Daniel nodded.

“I understand.”

For the first time in eleven years, Marcus stopped allowing gratitude to blind him to betrayal.

Daniel walked away in handcuffs.

Eli stood beside Marcus.

“What happens now?”

Marcus looked at his son.

“Now?”

He smiled.

“Now I learn how to walk.”

Eli smiled back.

“No.”

Marcus frowned.

“No?”

“You already know how.”

May you like

Eli pointed toward the courthouse steps.

“Now you learn how to run.”
