Chapter 3: The Truth That Saved Them

The truth came out during the court hearing.

Derek arrived wearing an expensive suit.

He believed he had won.

His lawyer presented him as the victim.

A betrayed husband.

A man whose reputation had been destroyed.

Then Marcus walked in.

Not alone.

Behind him was a woman carrying a sealed file.

The courtroom became silent.

Derek recognized her.

His confidence disappeared.

“Who is she?”

Marcus looked at him.

“The person who knows everything.”

The woman stepped forward.

“My name is Sarah Collins.”

She looked at Derek.

“And I was Brooke’s former friend.”

Brooke’s face turned white.

Sarah placed documents on the table.

Messages.

Recordings.

Plans.

Everything.

“I helped them create the plan.”

The courtroom erupted.

Brooke stood up.

“Sarah, don’t!”

But it was too late.

Sarah continued.

“They planned to make Lila look unstable, force a divorce, and take control of her assets.”

Derek’s lawyer tried to interrupt.

But the judge stopped him.

The evidence was overwhelming.

Then Marcus revealed the final secret.

The photograph.

The one Brooke had sent.

The one she thought would destroy him.

It actually proved something else.

Twenty-eight years ago, Marcus had rescued a baby girl after her mother died.

That baby was Lila.

But Marcus wasn’t her biological father.

He was the man who chose to raise her.

The man who stayed.

The man who loved her.

Marcus looked at Lila.

“I wasn’t your father because of blood.”

His voice cracked slightly.

“I was your father because I never left.”

Tears filled Lila’s eyes.

Derek and Brooke were arrested for fraud, assault, and conspiracy.

Months later, Lila gave birth to a healthy baby girl.

Marcus held his granddaughter for the first time.

He smiled.

A smile nobody in the army had ever seen.

Lila watched him.

“You’re going to spoil her.”

Marcus looked down at the baby.

“Of course.”

A small smile appeared.

“I spent my whole life protecting people.”

He looked at Lila.

“Now I get to protect two.”

One year later, Lila stood in the nursery that once held pain.

The same room where Derek tried to destroy her.

But now it was different.

The walls were painted warm colors.

Baby toys filled the shelves.

And her daughter’s laughter filled the house.

Marcus stood beside her.

“You know,” Lila said softly, “I thought that night was the end of my life.”

Marcus looked at her.

“No.”

He smiled.

“It was the night you finally found out who was willing to fight for you.”

Lila looked at her daughter sleeping peacefully.

And she finally understood.

Derek had tried to break her.

But he had forgotten one thing.

She was not alone.

Because some enemies choose the wrong person to hurt.
