Chapter 1: The Colonel’s Warning

Derek had spent his entire life believing money could protect him.
The mansion.
The expensive lawyers.
The powerful friends.
Everything had always worked in his favor.
Until Colonel Marcus Reed walked through his front door.
The room became painfully quiet.
Derek stared at the older man standing in front of him, trying to convince himself that he was still in control.
“You’re trespassing,” Derek said, forcing a laugh. “You think wearing that old military jacket gives you the right to scare people?”
Marcus Reed slowly turned his eyes toward him.
There was no anger.
No shouting.
That was what terrified Derek the most.
A man like Marcus didn’t need to raise his voice.
He had spent decades giving orders in places where hesitation meant death.
“I asked you a question,” Marcus said.
His voice was calm.
“Where is my daughter?”
Brooke stepped closer to Derek, pretending confidence.
“Your daughter is being dramatic,” she said. “She fell. That’s all.”
Marcus looked at her.
Just one look.
And Brooke’s smile disappeared.
“You’re the woman who was in my daughter’s house.”
Brooke swallowed.
“She invited me.”
Marcus tilted his head slightly.
“Interesting.”
He reached into his jacket and pulled out his phone.
On the screen was a photo.
A picture Lila had secretly taken of her bruised arm.
Derek’s face changed.
Marcus noticed.
“You recognize this?”
Derek said nothing.
“That’s what I thought.”
The sound of footsteps came from upstairs.
Everyone turned.
Lila slowly appeared at the top of the stairs.
Her face was pale.
One hand rested protectively over her belly.
The moment Marcus saw her, the cold expression disappeared.
“Sweetheart…”
He moved toward her instantly.
Lila tried to stay strong.
But seeing her father broke the wall she had built.
She collapsed into his arms.
“I was so scared,” she whispered.
Marcus held her carefully.
“You’re safe now.”
Derek watched the scene with growing anger.
“You’re making a mistake,” Derek said. “This is my house. My marriage. You don’t know the whole story.”
Marcus looked over his shoulder.
“No.”
A pause.
“I know enough.”
He walked toward Derek.
“You hit my daughter.”
Derek opened his mouth.
But Marcus continued.
“You threatened my grandchild.”
Derek’s face went pale.
“And you brought another woman into the home where my daughter was carrying your baby.”
The silence became unbearable.
Marcus stepped closer.
“I have spent thirty years dealing with men like you.”
Derek forced a smile.
“And what exactly are you going to do?”
Marcus looked at him.
“I’m going to make sure you never hurt her again.”
The police arrived twenty minutes later.
Not because Marcus called them.
Because the security system in the mansion had recorded everything.
Every argument.
Every threat.
Every moment Derek grabbed Lila.
Derek’s confidence vanished when the officers showed him the footage.
Brooke started crying.
“It wasn’t supposed to happen like this.”
Derek looked at her.
“You said everything would be fine.”
Brooke looked away.
And Marcus noticed.
A secret was hiding between them.
May you like
Something bigger.
Something they were afraid of.
