Chapter 3: The Man From The Past

Emergency lights turned on.
Standing at the end of the hallway was Daniel.
Claraâs husband.
The man everyone believed had died three years ago.
The little girl stared at him.
âDaddy?â
Her voice was barely a whisper.
Daniel looked at his daughter.
His eyes filled with regret.
âIâm sorryâŠâ
Clara stepped back.
âNo.â
Her voice trembled.
âYou donât get to come back and say sorry.â
Daniel lowered his head.
âI was trapped.â
The grandmother interrupted.
âTell her the truth.â
Everyone looked at her.
Danielâs face changed.
The grandmother smiled.
âTell her who helped you disappear.â
Clara looked at Daniel.
SlowlyâŠ
Realization appeared in her eyes.
âYou worked with her?â
Daniel said nothing.
That silence hurt more than any answer.
The little girl started crying.
âYou left us?â
Daniel looked broken.
âI thought I was protecting you.â
Clara laughed bitterly.
âProtecting us?â
She stepped closer.
âYou let your mother destroy our lives.â
Daniel closed his eyes.
Because she was right.
Then he reached into his pocket.
âI have something.â
He handed Clara a folder.
Inside were documents.
Bank transfers.
Secret agreements.
Proof of everything.
âThe truth about my mother.â
The grandmotherâs face changed.
âDanielâŠâ
But he stepped away from her.
âNo, Mom.â
May you like
His voice hardened.
âYou destroyed my family.â
