CHAPTER 1: The Letter Sophie Never Wanted Them to Read

Carol stood frozen in the middle of the bedroom.
The woman who had walked upstairs ready to accuse her daughter-in-law of laziness was now holding an envelope with shaking hands.
For years, Carol Bennett had believed she could read people.
She trusted actions.
She judged silence.
And this morning, she had decided Sophie’s silence meant disrespect.
But now…
She wasn’t sure of anything anymore.
“Daniel…” Carol whispered.
Her son looked at her with confusion.
“What happened?”
Carol didn’t answer.
She looked down at the envelope.
There was no name written on it.
No address.
Only one sentence on the front.
“If I don’t survive, Daniel deserves to know the truth.”
Daniel’s face changed instantly.
“What is that?”
Carol hesitated.
For a moment, she wanted to hide it.
Protect Sophie’s privacy.
But then she looked at the woman lying unconscious on the bed.
The woman who had entered their family only one day ago.
The woman who had smiled through pain.
The woman who had never complained.
Carol slowly opened the envelope.
Inside was a stack of medical records.
A photograph.
And a handwritten letter.
Her eyes moved across the first line.
“Daniel, I’m sorry I couldn’t tell you before our wedding.”
Daniel stopped breathing.
“Why is my name on that?”
Carol handed him the letter.
His hands trembled as he read.
Dear Daniel,
I wanted to tell you everything before I became your wife.
I wanted to explain why I was always tired.
Why I disappeared for hours.
Why I sometimes couldn’t walk up the stairs without stopping.
But every time I looked at you, I saw how happy you were.
And I was afraid.
Afraid that you would look at me differently.
Daniel’s eyes filled with confusion.
Carol continued reading silently.
Then she reached the next page.
And her expression changed.
Because the truth was not just about Sophie’s illness.
It was about someone else.
Someone inside their own family.
The final sentence made Carol drop the paper.
“The reason I almost canceled our wedding is because I found out someone has been poisoning my medication.”
The room became silent.
Daniel looked up.
“What?”
Carol stared at Sophie.
Her pale face.
Her weak breathing.
Suddenly, every strange moment from the past week made sense.
The dizziness.
The sudden weakness.
The hospital visit.
Someone had been trying to make Sophie disappear.
And they had almost succeeded.
Then Daniel noticed something.
A small crack in the bedroom door.
May you like
Someone had been standing outside.
Listening.
