Chapter 14: The Last Choice

Darkness swallowed the vault.

The only sound was the slow electronic beep coming from somewhere beneath the floor.

Beep.

Beep.

Beep.

No one moved.

No one breathed.

Then the emergency lights flickered to life, bathing the archive in a dim crimson glow.

Lady Beatrice still held the black remote in her hand.

Her thumb rested on the red trigger.

Adrian kept his eyes fixed on her.

"If you press it, you die too."

She smiled faintly.

"I accepted that years ago."

Charles took one careful step forward.

"You've already destroyed our family."

"There is still one thing you don't have to destroy."

For the first time, Lady Beatrice looked directly at him.

"I never destroyed this family."

"I rebuilt it."

Charles shook his head.

"You ruled it."

"Those are not the same thing."

The upload monitor continued counting.

58%

59%

60%

Every second carried another piece of the truth beyond the walls of the vault.

Gideon slowly lowered his pistol.

He looked at Lady Beatrice with empty eyes.

"My father trusted you."

"You let me spend thirty years hating the wrong man."

Lady Beatrice answered without hesitation.

"Hatred made you useful."

The words struck harder than any bullet.

Gideon's fingers loosened.

The pistol slipped from his hand and clattered across the stone floor.

"I was only a tool."

"You were an obedient one."

A deep rumble rolled through the chamber.

Small fragments of dust drifted from the ceiling.

Charles looked around.

"The charges are armed."

Adrian frowned.

"I thought she hadn't pressed the trigger."

Charles pointed toward the remote.

"She didn't."

"The demolition system activates automatically once the vault loses power."

Everyone turned toward the shattered cassette recorder.

The bullet that destroyed it had also severed the emergency electrical circuit.

Lady Beatrice had doomed them the moment she fired.

Hayes's voice echoed through Adrian's memory.

Think before you react.

Adrian forced himself to breathe.

There had to be another way.

He searched the room.

Ancient shelves.

Steel cabinets.

The central console.

Then he noticed something hidden beneath the wooden desk.

A brass lever.

Covered in dust.

Charles saw it too.

"My father always built a manual override."

Lady Beatrice's expression changed.

"No."

Charles rushed toward the desk.

She fired.

The bullet struck the floor inches from his foot.

Adrian tackled her before she could fire again.

Both of them crashed into the archive shelves.

Boxes spilled everywhere.

Thousands of documents scattered across the stone floor like snow.

Lady Beatrice fought with surprising strength.

She struck Adrian across the face with the metal remote.

Blood ran from a cut above his eyebrow.

"You always were too much like your father," she hissed.

"And you never understood why he survived."

Adrian twisted her wrist.

The remote flew across the room.

Celeste dove for it.

Another explosion shook the vault.

One of the granite pillars cracked.

Vivienne grabbed Charles and pulled him toward the brass lever.

"Go!"

Charles threw his full weight against it.

Nothing happened.

Again.

The mechanism groaned but refused to move.

"It needs two people!"

Adrian heard him.

He shoved Lady Beatrice backward.

Gideon stepped between them.

"Go."

Adrian looked at him.

"What about you?"

Gideon glanced at the letter still lying on the floor.

"My father asked Charles to protect my family."

"I think it's my turn to protect his."

Without another word, Gideon blocked Lady Beatrice's path.

She stared at him in disbelief.

"You would betray me?"

"I finally stopped betraying my father."

Adrian sprinted toward Charles.

Together they pulled the heavy lever downward.

Deep within the walls, ancient gears began turning.

The countdown on the demolition panel paused.

00:28

The room fell silent.

Then another message appeared.

Manual override accepted.

Secondary confirmation required.

A narrow compartment slid open beneath the console.

Inside rested a single bronze key.

Charles closed his eyes.

"I remember this."

"My father said the key should never be used unless the family deserved the truth."

Adrian picked it up.

It felt unexpectedly warm.

He inserted it into the lock beneath the monitor.

The mechanism turned with a loud click.

The upload resumed.

81%

Lady Beatrice screamed.

"No!"

She broke free from Gideon and lunged toward the console.

Gideon caught her again.

This time she drove a hidden knife into his side.

He staggered but refused to let go.

"Run!" he shouted.

Adrian looked back.

Gideon smiled through the pain.

"Finish what our fathers started."

Charles grabbed Adrian's shoulder.

"We don't have time."

The monitor climbed relentlessly.

The vault trembled again.

A section of the ceiling collapsed, blocking the entrance corridor with tons of stone.

Dust filled the air.

Vivienne covered Celeste with her body.

Charles shielded Adrian from falling debris.

The old man coughed.

Then laughed quietly.

"My father always said..."

"The truth demands a price."

The monitor reached:

97%

Lady Beatrice suddenly stopped struggling.

She looked at Adrian.

Not with hatred.

Not with fear.

But with resignation.

"You still don't understand."

Adrian stood motionless.

"What don't I understand?"

She glanced toward the steel shelves surrounding them.

"The evidence will destroy far more than me."

"It will destroy governments."

"It will destroy companies."

"It will destroy people who had nothing to do with this family."

Adrian answered calmly.

"Then let the innocent explain themselves."

"And let the guilty answer for what they did."

She smiled sadly.

"You sound exactly like your grandfather."

The monitor flashed.

99%

A long tone filled the vault.

Everyone looked at the screen.

100%

Evidence Transmission Complete.

For a heartbeat, nothing happened.

Then every monitor in the archive displayed the same message.

External confirmation received.

Copies secured.

Charles slowly sat down.

The weight of thirty years seemed to leave his shoulders.

"It's over."

Lady Beatrice closed her eyes.

"No."

She opened them again.

"It has only begun."

Before anyone could react, a hidden door at the far end of the archive slid open with a metallic hiss.

Cold air rushed into the room.

Footsteps echoed from the darkness beyond.

Not one person.

Several.

Heavy boots.

Measured.

Professional.

Adrian instinctively stepped in front of Charles and Vivienne.

Shapes emerged from the shadows.

Black tactical uniforms.

No insignias.

No visible names.

The leader removed his gloves and looked directly at Adrian.

"You uploaded the archive."

It was not a question.

Adrian nodded once.

The stranger's expression remained unreadable.

"Then you have just exposed the largest corruption network in modern history."

He paused.

"And every surviving member now knows your name."

Behind him, dozens more agents entered the vault.

The leader extended his hand.

"Mr. Blackwood..."

"You and your family are no longer witnesses."

"You are now targets."

The emergency lights flickered once more.

Far above, police sirens mixed with the distant sound of helicopter rotors.

But Adrian knew the nightmare was far from over.

May you like

The truth had escaped the vault.

Now the people it threatened were coming for everyone he loved.
